The Shining is a cult movie that most of the fans of the genre have already seen. Directed by genius Stanley Kubrick and played by Jack Nicholson as the main character, it's in my humble opinion the best psychological horror movie of all time.
The film shows us the story of Jack Torrance, a teacher who decides to dedicate himself to writing and asks for a job as a hotel keeper to isolate himself and thus be able to concentrate on his work as a writer. His employers tell him that terrible events have happened at the hotel, the previous caretaker killed his family in an isolation crisis.
Little by little, we see the mental deterioration of Jack Torrance who already had alcoholism and aggressiveness problems, however, before arriving at the hotel he was claiming his mistakes. We can appreciate his wife, Wendy Torrance, as a rather submissive and mentally fragile woman who tries to do what is best for her son and appease Jack.
El resplandor es un clásico de culto que la mayoría de los fieles del género ya han visto. Dirigida por el genio Stanley Kubrick e interpretada por Jack Nicholson como personaje principal, es bajo mi humilde opinión la mejor película de terror psicológico de todos los tiempos.
La película nos muestra la historia de Jack Torrance, un profesor que decide dedicarse a la escritura y pide trabajo como cuidador de un hotel para aislarse y de esa manera poder concentrarse en su trabajo como escritor. Sus empleadores le cuentan que han pasado sucesos terribles en el hotel, el cuidador anterior mato a su familia en una crisis por el aislamiento.
Poco a poco vemos el deterioro mental de Jack Torrance que ya de por si tenía problemas de alcoholismo y agresividad, sin embargo antes de llegar al hotel estaba reivindicándose de sus errores. Podemos apreciar a su esposa, Wendy Torrance, como una mujer bastante sumisa y frágil mentalmente que trata de hacer lo mejor para su hijo y apaciguar a Jack.
Nicholson's performance is simply masterful, the psychotic scenes are memorable and many of the shots that were recorded with innovative technology at the time (the Steadicam camera that makes the shots are fixed and therefore getting long scenes without any errors or tremors in the filming) are impressive as is the case of Danny the son of Jack riding a tricycle.
One of the most impressive things about this film is the soundtrack, which makes simple scenes cause us more intrigue and transform normality into surrealism and that can be appreciated from the beginning of the film with a recording of some mountains and in the terrifying music in the background as if letting us know what awaits us when we see this film.
La actuación de Nicholson es simplemente magistral, las escenas psicóticas son memorables y muchos de los planos que fueron grabados con una tecnología innovadora para aquel entonces (la cámara steadycam que hace que los planos sean fijos y por ende consiguiendo escenas largas sin ningún error o temblor en la filmación) son impresionantes como lo es el caso de Danny el hijo de Jack manejando un triciclo.
Una de las cosas más impresionantes de esta película es la banda sonora, la cual consigue que escenas simples nos causen más intriga y transformen la normalidad en surrealismo y eso se puede apreciar desde el comienzo de la película con una grabación de unas montañas y en el fondo una música aterradora, como haciéndonos saber lo que nos espera al ver este film.
This film is not exactly a faithful adaptation to the novel and was criticized in its time for that very reason. Stephen King himself was rejected as a screenwriter in favor of Diane Johnson who considered King a low-quality writer. King in turn ended by saying that The Shining was a very bad adaptation of his novel. The truth is that regardless of the level of adaptation, the film, far apart from the novel, is a great work, due to its aesthetics, music and Nicholson's performance.
The argument is presented to us in a somewhat abrupt way without giving us too many explanations or with an unorthodox development in the characters, the most remarkable thing in the work is the aesthetics, the planes and the different situations that are shown to us little by little. as the movie progresses. This work tries to terrify us in a more psychological and less visceral way as is usual in the horror genre, it tries to take away our peace in a subtle way, creating a gradual shock through our eyes and ears that little by little are getting used to the story, a story that shows us a terror in crescendo.
Esta película no es precisamente una adaptación fiel a la novela y fue criticada en su tiempo por eso mismo. El propio Stephen King fue rechazado como guionista en pro de Diane Johnson quien consideraba a King un escritor de baja calidad. King a su vez termino diciendo que El resplandor fue una muy mala adaptación de su novela. Lo cierto es que independientemente del nivel de adaptación la película muy aparte de la novela es una gran obra, por su estética, música y por la actuación de Nicholson.
El argumento se nos presenta de una manera un poco abrupta sin darnos demasiadas explicaciones o con un desarrollo poco ortodoxo en los personajes, lo más destacable en la obra es la estética, los planos y las diferentes situaciones que se nos van mostrando poco a poco a medida que la película avanza. Esta obra intenta aterrarnos de manera más psicológica y menos visceral como es lo usual en el género del terror, intenta arrebatarnos la paz de manera sutil, creándonos un shock paulatino a través de nuestros ojos y oídos que poco a poco se van acostumbrando a la historia, una historia que nos muestra un terror in crescendo.
There are many details in the film, the sheets written by Jack Torrance and read by his wife Wendy show us that there are deliberate mistakes in each of them, leaving us with more suspense about what was meant and showing a Torrance much more deranged. Torrance's mental decline is not too progressive, the character already lent himself to a similar situation, he just needed a push on a psychological level for the catastrophic events to begin to unfold.
The topic of houses with ghosts is not something new at all these days and it is even trite, however in the time of the 80's it was something innovative and besides the work shows us these ghosts not in a too fanciful way and scaring us with screamers for everywhere but they are more for aesthetic purposes in the film and have little to do with the plot except when they recommend Torrance to "take care" of his family.
Danny, the child of the family, appears to us as a child with psychological problems due to the abuse of his father, a violent guy who dislocates a man on one occasion. Since then Danny has an imaginary friend and when that friend gets hold of him, he is quite scary, a role that many later films landed, placing a boy with a lonely and gloomy personality.
Hay muchos detalles en la película, las hojas escritas por Jack Torrance y leídas por su esposa Wendy nos muestran que deliberadamente hay errores en cada una de ellas, dejándonos con más suspense acerca de lo que se habrá querido decir y mostrar a un Torrance mucho más trastornado. El declive mental de Torrance no es demasiado progresivo, el personaje ya se prestaba para una situación similar, solo necesitaba un empuje a nivel psicológico para que los eventos catastróficos empezaran a desarrollarse.
La temática de casas con fantasmas no es algo para nada nuevo en estos días y es incluso hasta trillado sin embargo en la época de los 80’s fue algo innovador y aparte la obra nos muestra estos fantasmas no de una manera demasiado fantasiosa y asustándonos con screamers por doquier sino que ellos están más por fines estéticos en la película y poco tienen que ver con la trama a excepción cuando recomiendan a Torrance a “encargarse” de su familia.
Danny, el niño de la familia, se nos presenta como un niño con problemas psicológicos por culpa del abuso de su padre, un tipo violento que le disloca un hombre en una oportunidad. Desde entonces Danny tiene un amigo imaginario y cuando ese amigo se apodera de él, es bastante aterrador, un rol que consiguieron muchas películas posteriores, colocando a un niño con una personalidad solitaria y lúgubre.
I think that this film doesn't lose its value despite being over forty years old, it's not about an overwhelming special effects film but about how to capture the viewer's attention on a psychological level by entering dungeons of the unknown, making us ponder over the mental profile of all the characters. The work, beyond psychological, is surreal, there is no 100% detailed explanation of the events but on an emotional level it's disturbing, we fear what we are observing without being completely sure why.
The final scenes are those that immerse us in this surreal world, full of darkness and terror, spaces full of blood that apparently is free but that in reality are part of the mental game that Kubrick wanted to achieve. The murderous twins that appear from time to time but without taking an important role, the corpses in the hotel, or the bartender who attends Torrance suggesting that he drinks alcohol are many of the psychological tricks with which the film plays and if we are attentive we will be able to give him meaning to that surreal puzzle.
Pienso que esta película no pierde vigencia a pesar de tener más de cuarenta años, no se trata de una película de efectos especiales abrumadores sino de cómo captar la atención del espectador a nivel psicológico adentrándonos en mazmorras de lo desconocido haciéndonos cavilar sobre el perfil mental de todos los personajes. La obra, más allá de psicológica es surreal, no hay una explicación 100% detallada de los sucesos pero a nivel emocional es perturbadora, tememos lo que estamos observando sin estar completamente seguros del por qué.
Las escenas finales son las que nos sumergen en este mundo surreal, lleno de oscuridad y terror, espacios llenos de sangre que aparentemente es gratuita pero que en realidad hacen parte del juego mental que Kubrick quería lograr. Las gemelas asesinas que de vez en cuando aparecen pero sin tomar un papel importante, los cadáveres en el hotel o el bartender que atiende a Torrance sugiriéndole que beba alcohol son muchos de los trucos psicológicos con los que juega la película y si estamos atentos conseguiremos darle un significado a ese rompecabezas surreal.
To achieve many of the memorable scenes of the deranged Jack Torrance, Kubrick had Nicholson record up to more than sixty times a single scene to drive the actor who already lived in one of his moments of madness to the brink of insanity. It's not difficult to imagine Nicholson truly unhinged after watching him in the shining, it's very easy to think that the actor was truly insane due to his masterful work.
For any horror lover, this is undoubtedly one of the best films of the genre, a cult classic and well deserved. Kubrick's work was always perfectionist despite the hell his actors could go through, but almost always achieving a majestic ending. This is an essential film in any horror collection, a film that will never lose its validity because it touches our fears in a subtle way, playing with the viewer until reaching an uncontrollable climax and asking us questions when we finish watching the film, which induces us to see it again to get more details, investigate the story and try to perceive every detail.

Para lograr muchas de las memorables escenas del desquiciado Jack Torrance, Kubrick hizo que Nicholson grabara hasta más de sesenta veces una misma escena para llevar al borde la locura al actor que ya de por si vivía en uno de sus momentos de locura. No es difícil imaginar a Nicholson verdaderamente desquiciado tras observarlo en el resplandor, es muy fácil pensar que el actor estaba realmente loco debido a su magistral trabajo.
Para cualquier amante del terror esta es sin duda una de las mejores películas del género, un clásico de culto y bastante merecido. El trabajo de Kubrick siempre fue perfeccionista pese al infierno que pudiesen pasar sus actores pero casi siempre logrando un final majestuoso. Esta es una cinta imprescindible en cualquier colección de terror, una película que jamás perderá vigencia debido a que toca nuestros miedos de manera sutil, jugando con el espectador hasta llegar a un clímax incontrolable y haciéndonos preguntas al terminar de ver el film lo que nos induce a volverlo a verlo para conseguir más detalles, indagar en la historia y tratar de percibir cada detalle.

me encanta todo lo que hizo Kubrick, no solo en esta película. Toda su filmografia. Si, el director era obsesivo, un infierno trabajar con el, según testimonios de la mayoría de los actores, pero por algo sus obras forman parte de lo mejor del séptimo arte.
El tipo era un perfeccionista, llevaba al limite todo y por ende alcanzo la cumbre entre los mejores directores de la historia, junto a Bergman o Kurosawa. One of the reasons why I decided to watch this film was because a cousin of mine became super excited about it and told me over and over again how cool this movie was. It was a lot of years ago, and during that time I didn't know how to appreciate classic films like I do now. I thought they are looked outdated and boring but how wrong I was. The Shining is a well-deserving classic of the genre and has one of the best performance from Jack Nicholson, the only thing I didn't like was the performance from the actress that plays his wife. But the plot is a masterpiece. This was one of the films that convinced me to start watching classic films as a whole.
Dude there are a lot of classics that worth to watch them and in this case is not outdated cuz the plot itself didn't require visual effects and shits like that. Jack Nicholson was the beast in this film, his role as a maniac is a masterpiece and yeah I agree with you the wife's acting was a shit.
