League of Movies (Fourth Edition | Week 03): Zoolander 2

If I'm asked about a sequel that no one needed nor wanted is Zoolander 2, a movie that came out in 2016 following the massive hit of Zoolander in 2001. Even by just looking at the year gap of 15 years, it's obvious this movie was only made as a cash grab, having been released in a year where it was common to remake or make sequels of old movies to get some money via nostalgia.

Most of the time these types of sequels don't fail in the box office, but this time it did, having a budget of 55 million dollars and earning only 56 million.

Zoolander 2 is as the name indicates, the sequel of Zoolander. This movie, like the first one, was directed by Ben Stiller, who also works as the main actor. However, the writers were different from the first one and I'm glad they got out of this trainwreck.

This movie is about Derek Zooland and Hansel, who are invited to a fashion event in Rome after being secluded for a long time from the fashion industry. Then it all turns for the worst when they meet Valentina, a special agent who wants their help to capture a criminal who is murdering pop stars that have posted a selfie with the signature Derek's look on social media. Our heroes must try to save potential future victims and catch the killer!

The first Zoolander was very funny in how ridiculous it was, but this one just tries too hard, they take every joke to the extreme and try to reuse jokes from the first one. Another thing that was very annoying is that they use a lot of celebrity cameos as a joke, they don't even have a purpose, it's just that "celebrity cameos are funny", to me that's very lazy writing.

This film was very ridiculous and no one needed it. The first one was loved by many and it worked perfectly as a solo movie, we didn't need a sequel but they wanted more money! This movie was too dumb and not in a funny way.

This is a film I don't recommend. It was dumb, and not funny. The cameos happen every 10 minutes and it's tiring, I feel like they didn't even try. By trying to make everything "greater" and duplicate the insanity of the first film, they took away from what made it so hilarious.

I think that this type of film doesn't work with our modern era, which is why Zoolander should have been kept in 2001, we didn't need to bring it back! We should really let certain franchises go.

Try to watch something else or rewatch the first one!

The first one is really fun, but the sequel (even with such a good cast) really was a mistake.

Good luck in the contest, @maeugenia.
