Hello, my dear cinephile friends, today I want to tell you about a gem of fantasy cinema that I saw when I was a child in the nineties and that a couple of days ago I saw again with a different approach obviously since I am an adult, but I was still captivated by the main message, it's Willow, and probably many of you have seen this film.
Hola, mis queridos amigos cinéfilos, hoy quiero hablarles de una joya del cine de fantasía que vi cuando era niña en los noventa y que hace un par de días volví a ver con otro enfoque obviamente ya que soy adulta, pero igualmente quedé prendada del mensaje principal, se trata de Willow, y probablemente muchos de ustedes hayan visto esta película.

A couple of days ago, after finishing my work, I was a bit bored, so I went through my film drawer and found this wonderful classic that I couldn't resist.
Hace un par de días, después de culminar mis labores, yo estaba un poco aburrida, así que me puse a revisar mi cajón de películas y encontré este clásico maravilloso al cual no pude resistirme.

I first saw this film in the nineties, but it was actually released in 1988 by George Lucas (the same genius behind Star Wars) and Ron Howard (the Cocoon director).
La primera vez que yo vi esta película fue en los noventa, pero realmente salió al cine en 1988, de la mano de George Lucas (el mismo genio detrás de La Guerra de las Galaxias) y Ron Howard (Director de Cocoon).
Resumen/Summary
This film tells the story of a young Nelwyn who wants to become an apprentice sorcerer, he lives in a quiet village with his family, but one day, his children find a baby Daikini (a person of conventional size, although Willow prefers to call them "giants") on the riverbank. The baby is being chased by the evil queen Bavmorda, who wants to kill her to prevent the child from destroying her in the future and becoming Empress, as the prophecy says. So, on the orders of the village leader, Willow must set out on a journey to the land of the Daikini to deliver the child, but along the way he grows fond of the baby and tries to protect her from harm.
Esta película nos cuenta la historia de un joven Nelwyn que quiere ser aprendiz de hechicero, vive en una aldea tranquila con su familia, pero en una ocasión, sus hijos encontraron en la orilla del río a una bebita Daikini (persona de tamaño convencional, aunque Willow prefiere llamarlos "gigantes") la bebé era perseguida por la malvada reina Bavmorda, que quiere matarla para evitar que la niña la destruya en el futuro y se convierta en Emperatriz, tal como reza la profecía. Entonces, por órdenes del líder de la aldea, Willow debe emprender un viaje a la tierra de los Daikini para entregar a la niña, aunque en el camino él se encariña con la bebé e intenta protegerla de todo peligro.
Along the way, he meets Madmartigan, a roguish, rough and shameless fellow, but also a great warrior, and the two of them, together with the friendly Brownies and the sorceress Fin Raziel, join forces to bring Elora Danan (the baby) to her destination at Tir Asleen castle.
Durante el recorrido, se consigue con Madmartigan, un tipo pícaro, rudo y sinvergüenza, pero que también es un gran guerrero, y ambos junto con los simpáticos Brownies y la hechicera Fin Raziel, unen sus fuerzas para llevar a Elora Danan (la bebé) hasta su destino en el castillo Tir Asleen.

Mi opinión/ my Opinion
This film is so full of surprises that I don't know where to start, but I think I'll start with what I consider most important, and that is that it broke all the paradigms and standards that were held at the time and even now about heroes, which are almost always big, strong and muscular, our protagonist is not like that at all, Willow is quite the opposite, he is a small and very insecure boy, in his own words "Even for a Nelwyn I'm too small".
Esta película está tan llena de matíces y sorpresas que no sé por donde empezar, pero creo que empezaré por lo que considero más importante, y es que rompió todos los paradigmas y estándares que se tenían en esa época y que incluso se tienen ahora acerca de los héroes, los cuales casi siempre son grandes, fuertes y musculosos, nuestro protagonista no es así, para nada, Willow es todo lo contrario, es un chico pequeño y muy inseguro, en sus propias palabras «Hasta para ser un Nelwyn soy muy pequeño»
He couldn't even pass the test of the great sorcerer of the village who could have made him his apprentice, but then we discover that when it came to giving the answer, Willow changed his mind at the last moment, being his original answer the correct one, in conclusion the sorcerer tells him that he is full of great strength and potential, but also of a huge insecurity that prevents him from seeing his own capabilities, but why do you think this happens? Because the same community where Willow lives underestimates him, especially one of the inhabitants, and this also happens in real life, how many times have we paid attention to the opinion that others have of us instead of recognising our own capabilities?
Ni siquiera pudo superar la prueba del gran hechicero de la aldea que hubiera podido convertirlo en su aprendiz, pero luego descubrimos que a la hora de dar la respuesta, Willow cambió de opinión a último momento, siendo su respuesta original la correcta, en conclusión el hechicero le dice que está lleno de una gran fuerza y potencial, pero también de una enorme inseguridad que le impide ver sus propias capacidades, pero ¿por qué creen que sucede esto? pues porque la misma comunidad donde vive Willow lo subestima, en especial uno de los habitantes, y esto sucede también en la vida real, ¿cuántas veces le hemos prestado atención a la opinión que los demás tienen de nosotros en lugar de reconocer nuestras propias capacidades?
Another important element in the story, although it may not seem so, are the Brownies, who are a kind of forest sprites, and whose main purpose is to become a relief for the viewer in moments of tension, as they dominate the humorous part of the film, however, in my humble opinion, I was able to find something else in these characters, I could find something more in these characters, and that is that they show Willow that there are other beings in the world smaller than him, but that, despite their apparent clumsiness, at the same time they can be very useful, as when they tried to open the padlock that kept Willow and Madmartigan captive.
Otro elemento importante en la historia, aunque no lo parezca, son los Brownies, que son una especie de duendecillos del bosque, y cuyo principal objetivo es convertirse en un alivio para el espectador en los momentos de tensión, ya que dominan la parte humorística de la película, sin embargo en mi humilde opinión, yo pude hallar algo más en estos personajes, y es que le demuestran a Willow que hay otros seres en el mundo más pequeños que él, pero que, a pesar de su aparente torpeza, al mismo tiempo pueden resultar muy útiles, como cuando intentaron abrir el candado que mantenía cautivos a Willow y Madmartigan.
Willow showed courage on numerous occasions, even though he was not proficient in magic, he took the wand from the sorceress Fin Raziel in an attempt to restore her human form, and even though he failed on numerous occasions and the effort caused him pain, he never gave up until he succeeded.
Willow demostró valor en numerosas ocasiones, aun y cuando no dominaba la magia, tomó la varita de la hechicera Fin Raziel para intentar devolverle su forma humana a ella, y a pesar de que falló en numerosas ocasiones y que el esfuerzo le provocaba dolor, nunca se rindió hasta conseguirlo.
On the other hand, although I liked Madmartigan's bravery and Sorsha's (the daughter of the evil queen Bavmorda) imposing personality, I honestly never made sense of the romantic relationship that arose between these two characters, it felt a bit forced since, if we analyse the story in detail, Madmartigan only felt an obvious physical attraction to Sorsha at first, intensified later by the Brownies' love potion, she hated his swagger, and to top it all off, she dedicated herself to following the girl's trail in order to capture her, so what made her change her mind? Just a physical attraction to a handsome brawler? A stolen kiss? It's a laughable thing that I don't think adds much to the plot. I would have preferred Sorsha's redemption to have happened in a different way, I don't know, maybe on her journey to find the girl she realised the havoc the queen (her mother) had wreaked and thus became disappointed in her.
Por otra parte aunque me gustaba la valentía de Madmartigan y la personalidad imponente de Sorsha (la hija de la malvada reina Bavmorda), honestamente nunca le encontré sentido a la relación romántica que surgió entre estos dos personajes, se sintió un poco forzada ya que, si analizamos con detalle la historia, Madmartigan solo sintió una evidente atracción física por Sorsha al principio, intensificada luego por la poción de amor de Los Brownies, ella por su parte odiaba la fanfarronería de él, y para colmo se dedicó a seguir el rastro de la niña con el objetivo de capturarla, entonces ¿qué la hizo cambiar de opinión? ¿solo una atracción física por un guapo pendenciero? ¿un beso robado? Es algo irrisorio que no creo que aporte mucho a la trama. Yo hubiese preferido que la redencion de Sorsha se hubiese dado de manera distinta, no lo sé, tal que en su travesía para encontrar a la niña se diera cuenta de los estragos que había hecho la reina (su madre) y que así se decepcionara de ella.

As for the photography, I think it was very well done, the colours that can be seen in the Nelwyn's village and in some of the landscapes during Willow and her friends' journey, transmit a lot of peace, with clear filters that bring warmth to the scenes.
En cuanto a la fotografía creo que estuvo muy bien lograda, los colores que se aprecian en la aldea de los Nelwyn y en algunos paisajes durante la travesía de Willow y sus amigos, nos transmiten muchísima paz, con filtros claros que aportan calidez a las escenas.
In scenes of tension or battle it's the opposite, there are dull colours and dark filters.
En las escenas de tensión o de batalla es todo lo opuesto, hay colores opacos y filtros oscuros.
A detail that I found quite interesting is the transformation of Bavmorda, since at the beginning of the story we can see her confident and her appearance looks radiant, but by the end of the story we see her totally different, her features look more hardened and aged as she feels threatened, we can even see her dark and deteriorated. I remember how scared I was of that scene when I was a child. I'll leave a couple of pictures below for comparison.
Un detalle que me pareció bastante interesante es la transformación de Bavmorda, ya que al principio de la historia podemos verla segura de sí misma y su apariencia se ve radiante, pero ya para el final de la historia la vemos totalmente diferente, sus rasgos se notan más endurecidos y envejecidos conforme ella se siente amenazada, incluso podemos verla oscura y deteriorada. Recuerdo lo mucho que me daba miedo esa escena cuando era niña. Abajo les dejaré un par de fotos para hagan la comparación.
Efectos especiales/Special effects
Although watching this film today did not produce the same impact on me as it did in my childhood, in terms of visual effects, because now they are fake and eloquent, at that time they were very good, not so much in the scenes where we see the two-headed creature attacking the castle of Tir Asleen (which was created with stop-motion, that is to say using puppets) but in the scenes of the transformation of the sorceress Raziel, in which the technique of digital morphing was used (very new for that time) which gave it more realism, although nowadays these scenes lack of great impact.
Aunque al ver esta película hoy en día no me produjo el mismo impacto que me produjo en mi niñez, en materia de efectos visuales, debido a que ahora se notan falsos y elocuentes, en esa época estaban muy bien, no tanto en las escenas donde vemos a la criatura de dos cabezas atacando el castillo de Tir Asleen (la cuál fue creada con stop-motion, es decir usando marionetas) sino en las escenas de transformación de la hechicera Raziel, en la cuál se empleó la técnica del morphing digital (muy nueva para esa época) lo que le aportó mayor realismo, aunque el día de hoy estas escenas carezcan de gran impacto.
Actuaciones/Performances
I liked all the performances although I think I must highlight Jean Marsh's (Queen Bavmorda) as she took her interpretation to the level where it generated real fear, her facial gestures denoted hatred and at the same time power, and on the other hand a young David Warwick (Willow) showed his great skills to play an imperfect hero and without a doubt he touched my heart in the scene where he leaves the castle crying with impotence when he saw that he lost Elora Danan (the baby).
Me gustaron todas las actuaciones aunque creo que debo resaltar especialmente la de Jean Marsh (La reina Bavmorda) ya que llevó su interpretación al nivel en que generaba verdadero miedo, sus gestos faciales denotaban odio y al mismo tiempo poder, y por otro lado un joven David Warwick (Willow) demostró sus grandes habilidades para interpretar a un héroe imperfecto y sin lugar a dudas me llegó al corazón en la escena donde sale del castillo llorando de impotencia al ver que perdió a Elora Danan (la bebé)
And finally there is one last thing I have to say regarding the plot. In the end, Willow manages to hide the girl from the witch using a simple magic trick, since obviously at that point, he had not learned to perform great incantations, and it was precisely that which I liked so much, that he managed to deceive and defeat the queen without great fuss, nor forcing the idea that, overnight, he became a great sorcerer. Willow simply looked inside himself and, using his cunning, used what he knew how to do well as a resource, that is, he managed to overcome his inferiority complex and insecurity, which gave the character a great development and outcome.
Y finalmente hay una última cosa que tengo que decir con respecto a la trama, y es que al final, Willow logra ocultar a la niña de la bruja usando un sencillo truco de magia, ya que obviamente a esas alturas, él no había aprendido a realizar grandes encantamientos, y fue precisamente eso lo que me gustó tanto, que lograra engañar y vencer a la reina sin grandes aspavientos, ni que forzaran la idea de que, de la noche a la mañana se convirtió en un gran hechicero. Willow simplemente buscó dentro de sí mismo y, valiéndose de su astucia, utilizó como recurso lo que sabía hacer bien, es decir, logró superar su complejo de inferioridad e inseguridad, lo que le otorgó al personaje un gran desarrollo y desenlace.

Y bien amigos, ese ha sido todo mi análisis, lamento si les pareció muy largo, pero de verdad tenía mucho qué decir acerca de esta joya. Willow también me enseñó que no existen los enemigos o héroes demasiado pequeños, ya que cualquiera podría resultar peligroso o poderoso. Ahh! y por último me gustaría decirles que estoy muy feliz porque Disney ya confirmó una secuela en formato serie para esta maravillosa obra que se convirtió en un clásico del cine de fantasía de los ochenta y se estrenará el próximo 30 de noviembre del 2022. Aquí les dejaré el trailer para que lo disfruten. Nada más con escuchar el iconico soundtrack se me erizan los vellos de la nuca por la emoción, es un retorno a mi niñez.
