Why isn't anyone talking about this piece of history? Or at least not to many people. I actually stumbled across a snippet of the film on Instagram, where it just played the name of the film in the background. I didn't hesitate to save the reel to look it up later, and just today I remembered it... I got 0 disappointment. Soft & Quiet, is an original story by debutant director Beth Araújo; and I hope it's not the first and last showing, because it's an hour and a half of pure genius. And searching a bit, I found that Beth took a bit of a risk with both the subject matter and the filming itself. And it turns out that, as it was her first shoot, she didn't have enough budget, so the whole movie was shot in only 4 days; which also translates into few rehearsals, few takes, in short... it was a total risk that resulted in a masterpiece (or at least for me).
¿Por qué nadie está hablando de este pedazo de historia? O por lo menos no mucha gente. En realidad, me topé con un fragmento del film en Instagram, donde solo ponía de fondo el nombre del mismo. No dudé en guardar el reel para luego buscarlo, y justo hoy lo recordé… me llevé 0 decepción. El Club del Odio, es una historia original de la debutante directora Beth Araújo; y espero que no sea la primera y última muestra, porque es hora y media de genialidad pura. Y buscando un poco, encontré que Beth se arriesgó un poco tanto con el tema, como con la grabación en sí. Y resulta que, como era su primer rodaje, no contaba con el suficiente presupuesto, así que toda la película se rodó en tan solo 4 días; lo cual también se traduce en pocos ensayos, pocas tomas, en fin… era un riesgo total que resultó en una obra maestra (o por lo menos para mí).
Actually the story itself is very short (that's why I won't do my usual subtitles), so I wouldn't know how to make a proper review of it, which makes me a bit sad, I feel I wouldn't do it justice. But I'll give it a shot.
Realmente la historia en sí es muy cortita (por eso no haré mis acostumbrados subtítulos), así que no sabría cómo hacer un adecuado review de ella, lo cual me da un poco de pena, siento que no le haría justicia. Pero lo intentaré.
The narrative is, if you will, somewhat simple, but with a message that detonates and makes you uncomfortable, you spend the whole time trying not to make faces of bewilderment or feeling repulsed. Beth wanted to achieve that effect, and boy, did she succeed! This movie could well be the perfect example that, to make good horror and suspense, you don't need to be chased through the woods with an axe or gallons of blood (although I like that kind of horror too). It delivers what this genre promises: to unsettle you, to leave you breathless, to give you anxiety, to surprise you and to feel relief with any insignificant detail.
La narrativa es, si se quiere, algo simple, pero con un mensaje que detona e incómoda, pasas todo el rato tratando de no hacer caras de desconcierto o sintiendo repulsión. Ese efecto lo quiso conseguir Beth ¡y valla que lo logró! Esta película bien podría ser el perfecto ejemplo de que, para hacer terror y suspenso del bueno, no hace falta que te persigan con un hacha por el bosque o galones de sangre (aunque también me guste ese tipo de terror). Cumple con lo que promete este género: alterarte, dejarte sin aliento, darte ansiedad, sorprenderte y sentir alivio con cualquier detalle insignificante.
By now, you must be wondering, "but what could the movie be about to leave us like this?" I told you, a triggering message that still haunts us today: Aryan supremacy, carried in such a "simple" way that it borders on the absurd: bullying in the best high school style, but that ends badly... very badly. The surprising thing about all this is that it is not carried out by students, but by "grown up" women who want to assert their right to be the best race in the world. The arguments are so empty and crude at the same time, that they make you question what is right and wrong, and that is how these people think. They try to manage everything so that you don't see that they are racists, that they don't hate anyone, but deep down they only have one fixed idea in mind: to hate anyone who is not like them. The plot revolves around all that stuff we see in the news about these acts and we think "I don't think it's real", "did they do it just for that?", yes, I repeat: they think like that and that's why they act the way they act. The women we see in this story are so banal that what they say could easily pass for envy, and they create this club just to talk about what the immigrants and blacks "stole" from their race, and how to make others understand that they are not wrong and they just want everything to be "normal and right".
A todas estas, deben estarse preguntado “¿pero de qué podría tartar para dejarnos así?” Se los dije, un mensaje detonante y que aún en nuestros días nos asecha: supremacía aria, llevada de una forma tan “simple” que raya en lo absurdo: acoso al mejor estilo de estudiantes de secundaria, pero que termina mal… muy mal. Lo sorprende de todo esto que no lo llevan a cabo unos estudiantes, sino mujeres “hechas y derechas” que quieren hacer valer su derecho de ser la mejor raza en el mundo. Los argumentos son tan vacíos y crudos al mismo tiempo, que te hacen cuestionar lo que está bien y mal, y es que así piensan estas personas. Todo lo tratan de manejar para que no se vea que son racistas, que no odian a nadie, pero en el fondo solo tienen una idea fija en mente: odiar a cualquiera que no sea como ellos. La trama gira en torno a todo eso que vemos en las noticias sobre estos actos y pensamos “no creo que sea real”, “¿lo hicieron solo por eso?”, sí, repito: ellos piensan así y por eso actúan como actúan. Las mujeres que vemos en esta historia son tan banales que lo que dicen podría fácilmente pasar por envidia, y se crean este club solo para hablar de lo que “les robaron” los inmigrantes y negros a su raza, y cómo hacer para que los demás entiendan que ellas no están mal y que solo quieren que todo sea “normal y correcto”.
The detail could be insignificant, but the fact that it has been a woman who has given life to this story, is spectacular, because the ideas are better understood between them and what they end up doing ... sorry, but I really do not think it could have been done by a man with so much coolness and mental agility. In fact, we can see it embodied within the film, one of the male characters (there are 3, by the way), runs away from the scene before the worst starts. That's how harmful these women were. Nothing is left to anticipation, as everything happens so fast, you don't know what's going to happen at the next camera turn. That was another detail I forgot to mention earlier! The footage seems to follow only a few shots behind the characters, which adds to the sense of discomfort because you can't tell what's going on next to someone else; and the worst thing happens while they're focusing on whoever is yelling or talking, but there's just enough context and noise to realize what's going on. Those little details, make you even more desperate (and awaken a little morbid) because you don't see what is happening, but you know it, and you surprise yourself because you imagined the scene and you feel more uncomfortable because you wanted to give an image to that terrible thing that happens.
El detalle podría ser insignificante, pero el hecho de que haya sido una mujer la que haya dado vida a esta historia, es espectacular, porque las ideas se entienden mejor entre ellas y lo que terminan haciendo… lo siento, pero realmente no creo que lo haya podido hacer un hombre con tanta frialdad y agilidad mental. De hecho, lo podemos ver plasmado dentro del film, uno de los personajes masculinos (son 3, de paso), sale huyendo de la escena antes de que empiece lo peor. Así de nocivas eran estas mujeres. Nada queda a la anticipación, como todo pasa tan rápido, no sabes qué va a ocurrir en el próximo giro de cámara. ¡Ese era otro detalle que me olvidé mencionar antes! La grabación pareciera que sigue solo unos pocos planos tras de los personajes, lo cual le agrega más sensación de incomodidad porque no puedes saber lo que ocurre al lado con otra persona; y lo peor ocurre mientras están enfocando a quien esta gritando o hablando, pero hay el suficiente contexto y ruido para darte cuenta de qué está sucediendo. Esos pequeños detalles, desesperan aún más (y despiertan un poco el morbo) porque no ves en sí qué pasa, pero lo sabes, y te sorprendes a ti misma o a ti mismo porque imaginaste la escena y te sientes más incómoda o incómodo porque quisiste darle imagen a eso tan terrible que ocurre.
The plot plays a lot with your mind to such an extent that, at one moment you are anxious because you don't want anyone to get them, and then you are wishing that something goes wrong and they are discovered... and that happens all the time. It's exhausting, I seriously had my heart racing and was desperate for what was going on. So I recommend watching it with several cups of tea or, if you like adrenaline, with a lot of coffee, but well charged (that's how I saw it, it made me more upset... I loved it). And now, I'll go and breathe calmly, because I just finished watching it and I started writing about it and I got upset again; so as I always tell you: "If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you already saw it, see it again, you can't miss anything".
La trama juega mucho con tu mente a tal punto que, en un momento estás ansiosa porque no quieres que nadie las consiga, y luego estás deseando que algo les salga mal y las descubran… y eso pasa todo el rato. Es agotador, en serio estuve con el corazón a mil y desesperada por lo que ocurría. Así que recomiendo verla con varias tazas de té o, si les gusta la adrenalina, con mucho café, pero bien cargado (así fue que la vi, me alteró más… amé). ¡Y ya!, me iré a respirar con calma, porque recién termino de verla y me puse a escribir sobre ella y me alteré otra vez; así que como siempre les digo: “Si no la han viso, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene perdida de nada.”

Está película me llamó la atención a comienzos del pasado año, es una genialidad de narrativa sobre cómo la frustración puede generar una gran cantidad de odió que impulsa a instintos violentos; en un momento del film pensé que si este grupo de mujeres en vez de ser blancas, pueden ser negras, indias, gays, feministas, seguramente hubiera funcionado de igual manera al crear una historia de terror, pero al momento de ver este film supe de la influencia que obtuvo de Araujo para realizar Soft & Quiet y fue sobre un incidente en Nueva York en dónde una mujer blanca, tomando como beneficio lo que es, difundió una falsa denuncia de agresión sobre un hombre negro que solamente estaba observando aves en un parque, ver ese vídeo despeus de ver la película hizo que esa producción sea aún más terrorífica de lo que es.
Sé a cual video te refieres, y sí que da mucha indignación. Esa tipa también querría formar parte de este club. Gracias por pasar por aquí :3
