I'm participating once again in the contest of our friend @zord189, who invites us to review a movie, for this week I chose the movie The Sessions.
The film is based on real events and tells the story of Mark O'brien, a quadriplegic man forced to live in an iron lung due to complications from polio who wants to know what it feels like to make love with a woman before dying. To achieve this, he turns to a sex therapist named Cheryl who helps him.
I loved the performance of John Hawkes, who for this film had to transform to see himself as a person whose body has suffered the ravages of an illness. Helen Hunt's performance was also brilliant, she had to show professionalism and make her patient see that it was her job and she could not involve her feelings, which she masterfully achieved with her performance.
In the film Mark debates whether or not he should lose his virginity by hiring the services of a therapist, he seeks God's permission through his friend Father Brendan, a priest with modern practices in his teachings, who listens to him and gives advice, but ultimately it's Mark who makes the decision by his own. Mark realized that despite his disabilities he could experience sex, and his need is so great that it overcomes his fears.
Our protagonist Mark, like all human beings, needs more than sex to feel the affection and closeness of another human being, to connect emotionally, to be caressed, to be kissed, and that is why this film made me feel a lot of tenderness. We can also notice the fine line between love and professionalism between Mark and Cheryl, how they grow, and learn together on this beautiful journey that leaves them with many teachings.
It is a film that you can not stop watching, although the subject is complex, it is focused in a way I could say funny and the protagonist is not portrayed as a man for whom we should feel sorry, on the contrary, he is a man who despite his disabilities manages to live a full life.
