Hey everyone, how have you been? I've been enjoying the first of my two week vacation time, I haven't done much really, just chilling, relaxing, and mostly sleeping 😅 but among the leisure I spend my free time on, watching movies is the main activity.
A couple of days ago I was with a friend and we watched Sucker Punch, she was confused by it and said it's a nonsense bunch of war clips mixed with random backstage stories.
Is it all random nonsense? let's see.
Hola a todos ¿cómo han estado? yo he estado disfrutando la primera de mis dos semanas de vacaciones, no he hecho mucho realmente, solo pasando el rato, relajándome, y más que nada durmiendo 😅 pero entre el ocio en el que ocupo mi tiempo libre, ver películas es la principal actividad.
Hace unos días estaba con una amiga y vimos Mundo Surreal, ella se confundió con la película y dijo que era un sin sentido lleno de clips de guerra mezclado con historias aleatorias tras bambalinas.
¿Es un sinsentido aleatorio? veamos.

What is it about?
As my friend said: it's a nonsense bunch of war clips mixed with random backstage stories.
It all happens in the 60s, starts with a quick story about Babydoll, her mom just died, her stepfather gets angry because according to the wife's will everything goes to her daughters.
Accidentally, Babydoll kills her sister in an attempt of protecting her from the abusive greedy stepfather who twists the story to his benefit and to have Babydoll locked down in a mental institution where she's about to get a lobotomy.
¿De qué trata?
Como dijo mi amiga: es un sinsentido lleno de clips de guerra mezclado con historias aleatorias tras bambalinas.
Todo ocurre en los 60, comienza con una rápida historia sobre Babydoll, su madre recién falleció, su padrastro se enoja porque según el testamento de su esposa todo va a sus hijas.
Accidentalmente, Babydoll mata a su hermana en un intento de protegerla de su abusivo y codicioso padrastro quien altera la historia a su beneficio para encerrar a Babydoll en un manicomio donde está por recibir una lobotomía.
The opening scene itself shows us that it's all a play, an unreal world, what we see is just a staged manifestation of what really happens and if we pay attention we can realize when we get to know the characters, that the narrator is Sweet Pea, this is her story and Babydoll is her angel which she talks about in the beginning.
The main purpose of the characters is to escape from the mental institution, an escape that happens not only physically but in mind, the worlds we see are an alter reality.
What do we do when we are going through difficult times? we think of how we would have done things different or wish to be somewhere else, these characters escape from their harsh realities by being protagonists in their own world, a world where getting hold of someone's lighter becomes an adventure where they have to fight a dragon to get fire from its offspring.
To escape the mental institution, Babydoll creates a plan, when she's being guided to her "new home" she sees her surroundings, this gets stucked in her head and during her fantasies she finds out she already has the weapons to fight her way out, she gets help from a "wise man" an elder man that shows in all the fantasies as a mentor, a guide. During her first fantasy he reveals the 4 things she needs to get out: a key, a map, fire, a knife and the 5th thing is a secret, the wise man just says it's something else.
The mental escape happens in 2 levels, the real world is the mental institution, the first level of escape is the fantasy of being in a burdel instead of a mental institution, the protagonists are forced to dance in order to entertain others and want to get free, and the second level of mental escape is the fantastic world where they face giant samurais, nazi like soldiers, dragons, robots, a world where they are powerful and skilled fighters.
They lose allies during their journey, in the end only Babydoll and Sweet Pea are the ones close to their freedom, using the items they got in their missions they make it all the way outside, where the obstacle remaining between them and freedom were some men, Babydoll stays behind to distract them so Sweet Pea can escape, once outside she takes a bus to get away from there... that's all the story, fight for her freedom...
But there's more details, as I mentioned before, Sweet Pea is the narrator, it's her story we're watching, she wants to break free but doesn't do anything because she doesn't know what to do to escape, not until she meets Babydoll who comes up with the list of items they need to escape, in their first imaginary world (the burdel) when Babydoll dances is hypnotizing to everyone giving this the chance to the rest of the girls to gather the items while everyone's distracted with Babydoll, in their second level of escape (the fantasy world) Babydoll is the main fighter defeating mostly everyone while the rest completes the mission, and in the real world, which isn't shown, I assume the mental institution staff gets distracted by the newly arrived Babydoll.
The fifth mysterious item in the list is revealed to be Babydoll herself, Sweet Pea was the one who needed those 5 things to escape, is just that we get fooled thinking that Babydoll is the one who's supposed to get free, but sadly she ends up having the lobotomy done on her, leaving her in her own world disconnected with the real world just as we all were during the whole movie, watching an alternative world, the characters take us with them in their mental escapes and actually the first time I watched the movie I forgot it was all about a mental institution 😅.
La escena de apertura nos muestra que todo es una obra, un mundo irreal, lo que vemos es solo una manifestación escenificada de lo que realmente sucede y si ponemos atención nos damos cuenta al conocer a los personajes, que la narradora es Sweet Pea, esta es su historia y Babydoll es su ángel de la cual habla al inicio.
El propósito principal de los personajes es escapar de la institución mental, un escape que ocurre no solo físicamente sino en mente, los mundos que vemos son una realidad alterna.
¿Qué hacemos cuando atravesamos momentos difíciles? pensamos en como habríamos hecho las cosas diferentes o deseamos estar en otro sitio, estos personajes escapan de sus duras realidades con ser protagonistas de su propio mundo, un mundo donde obtener el encendedor de alguien más se convierte en una aventura donde tienen que pelear con un dragón para obtener el fuego de su cría.
Para escapar del manicomio, Babydoll crea un plan, cuando es guiada a su "nuevo hogar" ve su entorno, esto queda en su mente y durante sus fantasías descubre que ya tiene las armas para pelear a su salida, obtiene la ayuda de un "hombre sabio" un mayor que se muestra en todas las fantasías como un mentor, un guía. Durante su primer fantasía el le revela las 4 cosas que necesita para salir: una llave, un mapa, fuego y un cuchillo, y una 5ta cosa que es un secreto, el sabio solo le dice que es algo más.
El escape mental sucede en 2 niveles, el mundo real es el manicomio, el primer nivel de escape es la fantasía de estar en un burdel, las protagonistas son forzadas a bailar para entretener a otros y quieren ser libres, y el segundo nivel de escape mental es el mundo fantástico donde enfrentan samurais gigantes, soldados tipo nazi, dragones, robots, un mundo donde son poderosas y peleadoras habilidosas.
Pierden aliadas durante el viaje, al final solo Babydoll y Sweet Pea son las más cercanas a la libertad, usando los objetos que obtuvieron en sus misiones se abren camino al exterior donde el único obstáculo que queda entre ellas y la libertad son unos hombres, Babydoll se queda atrás para distraerlos y así Sweet Pea pueda escapar, ya afuera toma un autobús para irse lejos de ahí... esa es toda la historia, pelear por su libertad...
Pero hay mas detalles, como mencioné antes, Sweet Pea es la narradora, es su historia la que vemos, ella quiere salir pero no hace nada porque no sabe qué hacer para escapar, no hasta conocer a Babydoll quien sale con la lista de objetos que necesitan para escapar, en su primer mundo imaginario (el burdel) cuando Babydoll baila es hipnotizante para todos, dando así oportunidad al resto de las chicas de reunir los objetos mientras todos se distraen con Babydoll, en su segundo nivel de escape (el mundo fantástico) Babydoll es la peleadora principal derrotando a casi todos mientras el resto completa la misión, y en el mundo real, el cual no es mostrado, supongo que el personal del manicomio se distrae por la recién llegada Babydoll.
El quinto objeto misterioso de la lista es revelado se trata de la misma Babydoll, Sweet Pea es quien necesitaba esas 5 cosas para escapar, es solo que somos engañados pensando que Babydoll es quien se supone sale libre, pero tristemente termina recibiendo la lobotomía, dejándola en su propio mundo desconectada del mundo real tal como nosotros estuvimos durante toda la película, mirando un mundo alterno, los personajes nos llevan con ellas en sus escapes mentales y de hecho la primera vez que vi la película olvidé que todo trataba de una institución mental 😅
Conclusion
It's one of those movies where either you hate it or love it, there's hardly an in between point. I'm on the love side, I like the soundtrack, I like the fighting scenes, the film itself looks like a graphic novel and it is entertaining visually, and the story isn't bad at all in my opinion, let's be honest, who hasn't ever fantasized on being a hero? being a skilled fighter who can defeat whatever comes in the way, Babydoll faces and defeats giant samurais made of stone in her mind, while in reality she's being analyzed by a doctor and in her first escape world she's being forced to dance. The group is seen fighting an army of soldiers and destroying a zeppelin to get a map instead of just seeing them take a map off from a wall and print a copy of it... an escape from reality brings a spice to our lives, we daydream more often than we realize and this movie shows how easily we can escape from reality if this one sucks, and even takes it a step further by escaping a double time.
This movie is like pretending to be deactivating a bomb when all we're doing is stopping the microwave on its last second but taken to the extreme.
Conclusión
Es una de esas películas que amas u odias, difícilmente hay un punto intermedio, yo estoy en el lado de amarla, me gusta la banda sonora, me gustan las escenas de pelea, el filme luce como una novela gráfica y es entretenida visualmente, y la historia no está tan mal en mi opinión, seamos honestos, ¿quién no ha fantaseado con ser un heroe? ser un luchador habilidoso que pueda derrotar a lo que sea que se nos atraviese, Babydoll enfrenta y derrota a samurais gigantes de piedra en su cabeza, mientras que en realidad está siendo analizada por un doctor y en su primer mundo de escape está siendo forzada a bailar. El grupo es visto peleando un ejército de soldados y destruyendo un zeppelin para obtener un mapa en vez de solo verlas quitar el mapa de una pared y sacarle una copia... un escape de la realidad da sazón a nuestras vidas, soñamos despiertos más seguido de lo que nos damos cuenta y esta película muestra qué tan fácil podemos escapar de la realidad si ésta apesta, y hasta lo lleva un paso más adelante escapando una doble vez.
Esta película es como pretender estar desactivando una bomba cuando todo lo que estamos haciendo es detener el microondas en su último segundo pero llevado al extremo.

Yo amé esta película! La historia me pareció interesante y me pasó como a ti, olvidé completamente que el psiquiátrico existía en un inicio, así que fue una sorpresa el final. Me encantó cada historia y las canciones

Si! Es buena película, aunque creo que no recibe el crédito que merece, me gusta como de forma sutil y a la vez directa manejan el tema de los abusos en el psiquiátrico.
