Bleach is one of the most internationally known shonen genre franchises, although it has not had the same scope of others such as Naruto, One Piece and of course Dragon Ball, it did know how to position itself among the best for its story, characters and fights. After the anime ended in March 2012 and its manga in 2016, it remained in the mouths of many among references, comments and the fervent desire for the anime to return to culminate what the manga had (also the desire to rearrange certain things of the last chapters of the manga but that is another topic). Last year it was announced that this wish would finally come true, the anime would return to cover the entire final arc of the manga "The Thousand Year Blood War" and would premiere this October 2022, whose first episode was officially aired last Monday 10. Now, after so much waiting, so many expectations and much hype, was the first episode really good?
Bleach es una de las franquicias del género shonen más conocidos internacionalmente, aunque no haya tenido el mismo alcance de otros como Naruto, One Piece y por supuesto Dragon Ball, si supo posicionarse entre los mejores tanto por su historia, personajes y combates. Luego de que el anime finalizara en marzo del 2012 y su manga en 2016, siguió en la boca de muchos entre referencias, comentarios y el ferviente deseo de que el anime regresara para culminar lo que el manga tuvo (también el deseo de que reacomodaran ciertas cosas de los últimos capítulos del manga pero eso es otro tema). El año pasado se anunció que este deseo finalmente se haría realidad, el anime regresaría para cubrir todo el arco final del manga “La guerra de sangre de mil años” y se estrenaría este octubre del 2022, cuyo primer episodio fue emitido oficialmente el pasado lunes 10. Ahora, después de tanta espera, tantas expectativas y mucho hype ¿realmente fue bueno su primer episodio?
Before going into context regarding the first episode of the new season, I will talk a little bit about the series and how it went as far as we could see it. Bleach was a manga that began circulation in Shonen JUMP magazine on August 7, 2001 ending on August 22, 2016 resulting in 74 volumes created by the great mangaka Tite Kubo. It had an anime adaptation on October 5, 2004 and ended on March 27, 2012 by Pierrot studio with a total of 366 episodes (both canon and non-canon content) covering almost all the manga content except the last story arc.
Antes de entrar en contexto con respecto al primer episodio de su nueva temporada, hablaré un poco acerca de la serie y como fue hasta donde pudimos verla. Bleach fue un manga que empezó circulación en la revista Shonen JUMP el 7 de agosto del 2001 finalizando el 22 de agosto del 2016 dando a lugar a 74 volumenes creado por el gran mangaka Tite Kubo. Tuvo una adaptación en anime el 5 de octubre del 2004 y terminó el 27 de marzo del 2012 por parte del estudio Pierrot con un total de 366 episodios (tanto contenido canon como no-canon) cubriendo casi todo el contenido del manga exceptuando el último arco argumental.
The protagonist is Ichigo Kurosaki, a teenager with a somewhat heavy but honest character, intolerant of injustice and a strong defender of his family and friends. He has always had the ability to see spirits and as an act of empathy and compassion, he would sometimes talk to them, make offerings and help them to have peace. One day he was attacked by an evil and monstrous spirit known as Hollows, but he was saved by Rukia Kuchiki, a shinigami, who gave him part of her abilities allowing him to be the same one, at least a substitute, thanks to this he could have his own weapon and fight the creature. From then on, Ichigo, Rukia and their friends Uryu Ichida (a Quincy), Sado Yasutora and Orihime Inoue have ventured on numerous journeys, from going to the Soul Society to rescue Rukia herself who was going to be executed, to then going to Hueco Mundo to rescue Orihime (I know, many kidnappings), to finally facing the longest running villain in history, Aizen Sousuke and his Arrancar and Espada army. Through it all, Ichigo and his friends have grown both as individuals and in their skills, mastering different techniques and styles. Ichigo managed to master the Shikai (first release of the powers of the Shinigami's swords, the Zanpakuto), Bankai (true and most powerful state of the Zanpakuto) and the state of Holowfication (the user allows the dark energies that characterize the Hollow to envelop them and make use of it for a short time) and even after losing his powers on one occasion he managed to learn a way to have abilities similar to the ones he had.
Bleach is a series with a constant sense of adventure, of challenges, with a huge variety of characters with very marked personalities, techniques and history that are easily remembered. If I had to define the series, it would be "determination", we constantly see the characters going forward and looking for a way out of what they are facing, even if the situation is against them, whether they are on the side of the good guys or villains.
El protagonista es Ichigo Kurosaki, un adolescente con un carácter algo pesado pero honesto, intolerante a las injusticias y un fuerte defensor de su familia y amigos. Desde siempre ha tenido la cualidad de ver espíritus y ante un acto de empatía y compasión, en ocasiones conversaba con ellos, les hacía ofrendas y los ayudaba a tener paz. Un día fue atacado por un espíritu maligno y monstruoso conocidos como Hollows (Huecos) pero fue salvado por Rukia Kuchiki una shinigami, la cual le cedió parte de sus habilidades permitiéndole ser el mismo uno, al menos sustituto, gracias a esto pudo tener su propia arma y combatir a la criatura. Desde ahí en adelante, Ichigo, Rukia y sus amigos Uryu Ichida (un Quincy), Sado Yasutora y Orihime Inoue se han aventurado en numerosas travesías, desde ir a la Sociedad de Almas a rescatar a la misma Rukia que iba a ser ejecutada, a luego ir a Hueco Mundo a rescatar a Orihime (si, muchos secuestros), para finalmente enfrentar al villano que más tiempo ha estado en la historia, Aizen Sousuke y su armada de Arrancar y Espada. Durante todo esto, Ichigo y sus amigos han crecido tanto como individuos como en sus habilidades, dominando diferentes técnicas y estilos. Ichigo logró dominar el Shikai (primera liberación de los poderes de las espadas de los Shinigami, las Zanpakuto), Bankai (estado verdadero y más poderoso de las Zanpakuto) y el estado de Holowficación (el usuario permite que las energías oscuras que caracteriza a los Hollow los envuelva y hacen uso de ello por un tiempo corto) e incluso tras perder sus poderes en una ocasión logró aprender una forma de tener habilidades parecidas a las que tenía.
Bleach es una serie con una constante sensación de aventura, de desafíos, con una enorme variedad de personajes con personalidades, técnicas e historia muy marcadas que se hacen fácilmente recordables. Si tuviera que definir la serie, sería “determinación”, constantemente vemos a los personajes yendo hacia adelante y si buscando la manera de cómo salir de lo que están enfrentando, aun si la situación está en su contra, sean los del bando de los buenos o villanos.
Now, getting to what interests us the most. As I mentioned before, the Bleach anime is coming back and this time to cover the final arc of the manga which is a really long one and many of us expected it to be animated (despite the criticisms it had in the last chapters). We spent the year without much news regarding what would be this anime, it had not even been confirmed until a few months ago if Pierrot studio would animate it again. When it was affirmed that it would be, the worries started, it's not that they did a bad job, over the years Pierrot improved a lot the animation quality of Bleach and in my opinion, it looked better than many other shonen in fashion but when you have seen more modern anime like Kimetsu no Yaiba, some people have high expectations. For my part, I was just settling for them to do a good job on certain important parts to come. The first trailer came out two months ago and it really shut people up, spectacular animation, impressive effects and masterful coloring, overshadowing even the manga quality. But of course, it's just a trailer, normally everything looks good to them, we would have to wait until October to see if it really did it justice... And now that we are on that date and it's out, I can say that it really was even better than expected.
Ahora, entrando a lo que más nos interesa. Como mencioné antes, el anime de Bleach regresa y esta vez para cubrir el arco final del manga el cual es uno realmente extenso y muchos esperábamos que fuese animado (pese a las críticas que tuvo en los últimos capítulos). Pasamos el año sin muchas noticias con respecto a lo que sería este anime, ni siquiera se había confirmado hasta hace pocos meses si el estudio Pierrot volvería animarlo. Cuando se afirmó que así sería, empezaron las preocupaciones, no es que hayan hecho un mal trabajo, con el pasar de los años Pierrot mejoró mucho la calidad de animación de Bleach y a mí me parecer, se veía mejor que muchos otros shonen de moda pero cuando se ha visto anime más modernos en animación como Kimetsu no Yaiba, algunos tienen expectativas altas. Por mi parte, solo me conformaba con que hicieran un buen trabajo en ciertas partes importantes que se vendrían. El primer tráiler salió hace dos meses y realmente calló a la gente, una animación espectacular, efectos impresionantes y un coloreado magistral, opacando incluso a lo visto en calidad al manga. Pero claro, es solo un tráiler, normalmente todo se ve bien ellos, habría que esperar a este mes de octubre para comprobar si en verdad le hacía justicia… Y ahora que estamos en esa fecha y ya salió, puedo decir que realmente fue hasta mejor de lo esperado.
This first chapter did not have an opening song, so it started directly with the story. It starts from where the anime left off a decade ago and faithfully follows the beginning of that arc in the manga. The chapter unfolds showing the problems that were starting to be born due to the influence of the new enemy, meanwhile, in Karakura village two young Shinigami are assigned to eliminate all the Hollows that can be found in the area. In the process, both are easily defeated by a horde of Hollows but are saved by Ichigo and his friends who have a brief introduction to the doing of their techniques, even showing their names on screen. After a quick fight showing how superior they are, they are both taken to Ichigo's house to be treated for their injuries by Orihime. Two days pass and when they were conversing an unknown guy, whom they think may be an Arrancar, appears in the room, Ichigo kicks him out and turns into a Shinigami to ask him who he is and what he wants. The guy is offended at being compared to an Arrancar and reveals that he is a Quincy, meanwhile, in the Soul Society a strong attack is seen while in the office of the leader of the squads, Yamamoto Genryusai, is confronted by some guys who report that in 5 days they will start a war against them. Sasekibe, Yamamoto's right-hand man and lieutenant of Squad 1, is killed there and although Yamamoto tries to attack the men, they disappear. Ichigo continues his fight with the guy who keeps attacking him provoking him to do something, Ichigo decides to use his Bankai to finish it once and for all which is revealed to be what the guy wanted, he takes out a medallion and activates it with the intention of stealing his Bankai but he does not succeed and retreats. At the end a man is seen sitting on a throne about to receive the report of what happened both of those who invaded the Soul Society and who attacked Ichigo.
Este primer capítulo no contó con un opening, por lo que empezó directamente con la historia. Empieza desde donde quedó el animé hace una década y fielmente a como empieza ese arco en el manga. El capítulo se desarrolla mostrando los problemas que estaban empezando a nacer debido a la influencia del nuevo enemigo, mientras tanto, en el pueblo Karakura dos jóvenes Shinigamis son asignados a eliminar todos los Hollows que puedan encontrarse en la zona. En el proceso, ambos son fácilmente derrotados por una horda de Hollows pero son salvados por Ichigo y sus amigos los cuales tienen una breve introducción al hacer de sus técnicas, mostrando incluso sus nombres en pantalla. Tras un rápido combate mostrando cuan superiores son, ambos son llevados a casa de Ichigo para ser tratados de sus heridas por Orihime. Pasan dos días y cuando estaban conversando un sujeto desconocido, al que creen que puede ser un Arrancar, aparece la habitación, Ichigo lo saca con una patada y se convierte en un Shinigami para preguntarle quien es y que desea. El sujeto se ofende al ser comparado con un Arrancar y revela que es un Quincy, mientras tanto, en la Soul Society se ve un fuerte ataque mientras que en la oficina del líder de los escuadrones, Yamamoto Genryusai, es confrontado por unos sujetos que informan que en 5 días iniciaran una guerra contra ellos. Sasekibe, la mano derecha de Yamamoto y teniente del escuadrón 1, es abatido en ese lugar y aunque Yamamoto intenta atacar a los sujetos estos desaparecen. Ichigo sigue su combate con el sujeto que no deja de atacarlo provocándolo a hacer algo, Ichigo decide usar su Bankai para terminar con ello de una vez lo cual se revela que era lo que el sujeto deseaba, saca un medallón y lo activa con la intención de robarle su Bankai pero no lo logra y se retira. Al final se ve a un hombre sentado en un trono a punto de recibir el reporte de lo ocurrido tanto de los que invadieron la Soul Society como de quien atacó a Ichigo.
Now that I have narrated what this first episode consisted of, I will talk about all my impressions:
Ahora que he narrado en consistió este primer episodio, hablaré de todas mis impresiones:
- To start with the animation, I was impressed with how well done everything is. It didn't look like it was made by the same animation studio and honestly when I saw the trailer I thought only the good stuff was put in it, but no, the whole chapter was excellent in animation, in colors, in camera changes, the stroke of the characters was very good. The chapter looked like a movie. The somber essence also gave it a nice touch associated with the spirit theme. Bleach has had many animation changes throughout its history, but I think this one is more pronounced and an excellence by far. I admit that I found the change in the tint level of the colors odd, before they were more vivid and now they have a more opaque style, which isn't bad but it is a big change. Even in humorous scenes, the faces do not have an exaggerated grimace, it still has the unreal is made more fluid with respect to the rest of the scenes.
- Para empezar la animación, quedé impresionado con lo bien realizado que está todo. No pareciera que fuera hecho por el mismo estudio de animación y sinceramente cuando vi el tráiler pensé que solo lo bueno fue puesto en él, pero no, todo el capítulo estuvo excelente en animación, en colores, en cambios de cámara, el trazo de los personajes fue muy bueno. El capítulo parecía una película. La esencia sombría también le dio un toque agradable asociado al tema de espíritus. Bleach ha tenido muchos cambios de animación a lo largo de su historia, pero creo que este es más pronunciado y una excelencia por mucho. Admito que me pareció raro el cambio de nivel de tinte en los colores, antes eran más vivos y ahora tienen un estilo más opaco, lo cual no está mal pero si es un gran cambio. Aun en escenas de humor, los rostros no tienen una exagerada mueca, sigue teniendo lo irreal se hace más fluido con respecto al resto de las escenas.
It may seem absurd to say, but how satisfying it is to hear the voice actors again. Even though 10 years have passed, feeling that commitment they have with their characters makes you feel that time has not passed, even actors of minor characters reprised their role to say just one sentence in this episode.
The music, of course Shiro Sagisu would again take the lead in creating the music in this season of Bleach as he did with everything before. His signature style can be heard and even though there are new themes, they have that essence that makes you say "Yes, this is from Bleach". I highlight how excellent and very nostalgic it was to hear the remix of the song "Number One" that has been heard since the beginning of the series as a background theme at the moment when Ichigo and his friends first appear and during the fight that followed that, it was a smart move and all of us who have watched and loved Bleach felt that song reach our hearts. The sound effects are also very well done, I quite liked the delicate sound of Uryu's arrows, it feels more real than before.
Puede parecer absurdo decirlo, pero que satisfactorio es el escuchar a los actores de voz de nuevo. A pesar de que han pasado 10 años, el sentir ese compromiso que tienen con sus personajes te hace sentir que no ese tiempo no ha pasado, incluso actores de personajes menores retomaron su rol para decir solo una frase en este capítulo.
La música, por supuesto que Shiro Sagisu tomaría de nuevo el mando en crear la música en esta temporada de Bleach así como lo hizo con todo lo anterior. Su estilo característico puede ser escuchado y aunque hay temas nuevos, tienen esa esencia que te hacen decir “Si, esto es de Bleach”. Destaco lo excelente y muy nostálgico que fue el escuchar el remix de la canción “Number One” que se ha escuchado desde los inicios de la serie como tema background en el momento en que aparece por primera vez Ichigo y sus amigos y durante el combate que siguió a eso, fue una jugada inteligente y todos los que hemos visto y amado Bleach sentimos esa canción llegarnos en el corazón. Los efectos de sonido también están muy bien hechos, me gustó bastante el delicado sonido de las flechas de Uryu, se percibe más real que antes.
The time passages were adequate, it will seem like something null to take into account in an anime but when you take care to place the scenes, voices, the proper focus on the objects and to show the scenery, the enjoyment is such that it is easier to immerse yourself in what you are watching.
The excellent way they have started the season. I think it's spectacular that they didn't waste time creating a compilation episode or a filler content just to start the series, it goes straight to the point keeping all the fidelity of the manga. With the scenes of suspense, intrigue and at the same time having the touch of humor in certain scenes.
Los pasos de tiempo fueron adecuados, parecerá algo nulo de tomar en cuanta en un anime pero cuando se tiene el cuidado de colocar las escenas, voces, el enfoque adecuado en los objetos y para mostrar la escenografía, el disfrute es tal que es más fácil sumergirse en lo que se está viendo.
La excelente manera en que han empezado la temporada. Me parece espectacular que no hayan perdido tiempo creando un episodio recopilatorio o un contenido de relleno solo para dar entrada a la serie, va directo al punto manteniendo toda la fidelidad del manga. Con las escenas de suspenso, intriga y a la vez teniendo el toque de humor en ciertas escenas.
- The special ending. Something that no one expected was that there would be an ending with a song of almost 4 minutes where they showed clips of characters and fights from all the past seasons. It was extremely nostalgic and I'm not going to lie that it affected me emotionally because I saw characters that I'm very fond of, plus seeing all those clips of old animations shows how much they have evolved and the immense love they have put into this saga. The song has very good lyrics and many of the clips were placed to fit with it. The official Aniplex channel posted the ending a few days ago so I'll leave it for you to check it out.
- El ending especial. Algo que nadie esperaba es que hubiese un ending con una canción de casi 4 minutos donde mostraran clips de personajes y combates de todas las temporadas pasadas. Fue sumamente nostálgico y no voy a mentir que me afectó mucho emocionalmente porque vi a personajes que les tengo mucho cariño, además que el ver todos esos clips de viejas animaciones muestra cuanto a evolucionado y el cariño inmenso que le han puesto a esta saga. La canción tiene una muy buena letra y muchos de los clips fueron colocados para que encajara con ello. El canal oficial de Aniplex colocó el ending hace unos días así que se los dejo para que lo revisen.
Bleach is back with a bang and definitely not afraid of success. Despite having only one episode, it is already in first place along with FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood as the best anime of all on the anime news website MyAnimeList, an impressive achievement that makes it clear that many of us were impressed with this great comeback, was it worth the 10-year wait? Definitely YES. Pierrot studio is doing an excellent job and putting a lot of love in this project and I hope they keep it up until the end of the season because what we saw is nothing with what will happen later (I read the manga years ago) and they deserve this quality of graphics and camera movements. Personally I am very happy with what I saw and the emotion I felt was huge. The special ending filled my eyes with tears when I saw my favorite characters, Byakuya Kuchiki and above all Ulquiorra Cifer, the lyrics of the song were very appropriate in Ulquiorra's scene and it was so evident how intentional it was that I honestly couldn't help but share that part everywhere. For those who have seen Bleach before, this is a season not to be missed, and for those who don't know the series, you can give it a try since even though there are many chapters some are fillers (but not like what happened with Naruto) and can be skipped, you can get them on any anime stream page.
Bleach ha regresado con todo y definitivamente sin tener miedo al éxito. A pesar de tener solo un episodio, ya se encuentra en el primer puesto junto con FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood como el mejor anime de todos en la página web de noticias de anime MyAnimeList, un logro impresionante que deja en claro que muchos quedamos impresionados con este gran regreso ¿valió la pena la espera de 10 años? Definitivamente SI. El estudio Pierrot está haciendo un excelente trabajo y colocando mucho amor en este proyecto y espero se mantengan así hasta el final de la temporada porque esto que vimos es nada con lo que pasará más adelante (leí el manga hace años) y merecen esta calidad de gráficos y movimientos de cámara. En lo personal estoy muy feliz con lo que vi y la emoción que sentí fue enorme. El ending especial me llenó los ojos de lágrimas cuando vi a mis personajes favoritos, Byakuya Kuchiki y sobretodo a Ulquiorra Cifer, la letra de la canción fue muy adecuada en la escena de Ulquiorra y fue tan evidente lo intencional que sinceramente no pude evitar compartir esa parte en todos lados. Para aquellos que han visto Bleach antes, esta es una temporada que no deben perderse, y para aquellos que no conocen la serie, pueden darse el intento de hacerlo ya que aunque son muchos capítulos algunos son rellenos (pero no como pasó con Naruto) y pueden saltarse, se pueden conseguir en cualquier página de anime.
