One of the most interesting aspects that usually characterize the passion for cinema is that those of us who feel it begin to understand each work beyond its own footage, understanding the context in which they arose and why this on many occasions elevates them.
It is not the same, for example, judging the special effects of a film that was a pioneer in the area (for better or worse) than judging a current blockbuster with hundreds of millions of dollars behind it and years of experience in the area. The same happens with directing techniques, the use of music, the presentation of its aesthetic components, and any other substantial or visual element that comes to mind.
However, there is a fascinating concept that totally breaks this logic: Timelessness. The idea that an audiovisual piece is not affected by the passage of time, its ability to remain firmly in place even though our society has evolved. The state of timelessness has many paths to reach it, but this does not mean that achieving it is an easy task.
The case of Rocky is quite particular, as you may already know, it is a 1976 film starring Sylvester Stallone and directed by John G. Avildsen, where the story of Rocky Balboa is portrayed: A rather humble young Italian-American with an impressive talent. for boxing.
Beyond the specific events that cloud its nearly two-hour run (as well as the plethora of sequels and spin-offs that followed) Rocky is a perfect guide on how to run the hero's path in the most essential terms possible, the idea of an imperfect protagonist who ends up facing a challenge where he must grow as a person to achieve his goals.
It's ironic, isn't it? Right off the bat, Rocky doesn't have any elements that make it special, but at the same time, this very minimalist approach allows everything we have in front of the screen to be polished to the maximum, although its own creators probably didn't know that they were forging a work of art.
Rocky works for two reasons, first of all we must recognize that it has a template of memorable characters, with solid narrative arcs and organic interactions with each other in a world that knows how to mix the depressing with the optimistic with great skill, apart from this it is a movie well built, with a calm rhythm but capable of evoking emotions and a direction that knows how to get the best out of all the actors that make it up.
Second, getting a little more abstract, Rocky works because we can all relate to his story to a greater or lesser extent, even if we're not necessarily a skilled boxer with a rather low IQ.
Rocky is about chasing our dreams but he is unable to paint everything in roses, there are constant obstacles in our way and pure and hard effort will never guarantee success, Rocky exists on a bitter message where sometimes triumphs do not go hand in hand with an objective achievement, but with the personal satisfaction that comes from having given everything we could, even if things eventually went wrong.
For me it is a film that could have been released 100 years ago, or could be released in 100 more, it has always worked and it will always work.
Uno de los aspectos más interesantes que suelen caracterizar la pasión por el cine, es que aquellos que los sentimos empezamos a comprender cada obra más allá de su propio metraje, entendiendo el contexto en el cual surgieron y por qué esto en muchísimas ocasiones las eleva.
No es lo mismo, por ejemplo, juzgar los efectos especiales de una película que fue pionera en el área (Para bien o para mal) que juzgar un blockbuster actual con cientos de millones de dólares detrás y años de la experiencia en el area. Lo mismo sucede con las técnicas de dirección, el uso de la música, la presentación de sus componentes estéticos, y cualquier otro elementos sustancial o visual que se nos ocurra.
No obstante, hay un concepto fascinante que quebranta totalmente está lógica: La atemporalidad. La idea de que una pieza audiovisual no se ve afectada por el paso del tiempo, la capacidad que tiene la misma para mantenerse firmemente aunque nuestra sociedad haya evolucionado. El estado de atemporalidad tiene muchos caminos para llegarle, pero esto no quiere decir que lograrlo sea una tarea facil.
El caso de Rocky es bastante particular, como ustedes ya sabrán se trata de una película de 1976 protagonizada por Sylvester Stallone y dirigida por John G. Avildsen, en dónde se retrata la historia de Rocky Balboa: Un joven italoamericano bastante humilde con un talento impresionante para el boxeo.
Más allá de los eventos concretos que nublan sus casi dos horas de duración (Así cómo la gran cantidad de secuelas y spin off que surgieron posteriromente) Rocky es una guía perfecta sobre el como ejecutar el camino del héroe en los términos más esenciales posibles, la idea de un protagonista imperfecto que termina encontrándose frente a un desafío en dónde debe crecer como persona para conseguir sus objetivos.
¿Es irónico, no? De buenas a primeras Rocky no tiene ningún elementos que la haga especial, pero al mismo tiempo, este enfoque tan minimalista permite que todo lo que tenemos frente a la pantalla este pulido al maximo, aunque probablemente sus propios creadores no supieran que estaban forjando una obra de arte.
Rocky funciona por dos motivos, en primer lugar debemos reconocer que cuenta con una plantilla de personajes memorables, con arcos narrativos sólidos e interacciones orgánicas entre si en un mundo que sabe mezclar lo deprimente con lo optimista con muchísima habilidad, aparte de esto es una película bien construida, con un ritmo calmado pero capaz de evocar emociones y una dirección que sabe sacar lo mejor de todos los actores que la conforman.
En segundo lugar, poniéndonos un poco más abstractos, Rocky funciona porque todos podemos identificarnos en mayor o menos medida con su historia, aunque no necesariamente seamos un hábil boxeador con un coeficiente intelectual más bien bajo.
Rocky va sobre perseguir nuestros sueños pero es incapaz de pintar todo en color de rosas, existen obstáculos en nuestro camino constamente y el esfuerzo puro y duro nunca nos garantizará el exito, Rocky existe sobre un mensaje amargo en dónde a veces los triunfos no van de la mano con un logro objetivo, sino con la satisfacción personal que viene con el haber dado todo lo que podíamos, aunque las cosas eventualmente salieran mal.
Para mí es una película que pudo haberse estrenado hace 100 años, o podría estrenarse dentro de 100 mas, siempre ha funcionado y siempre funcionará.

Que te puedo decir, todo un clásico, y por su duración al pasar del tiempo es que se considera de esa manera, una obra que siempre perdurará, como Terminator 1 y Rambo por dar un ejemplo. Jamás pasarán de moda.

I think the film is a great classic for coming at the right time, presenting a simple but well-told story, with a charismatic protagonist and a very motivating and even moving message of self-improvement. Its simplicity and effectiveness have made it age quite well and have been the inspiration for many other similar productions. I compare it with The Exorcist, today a similar film would not cause the same effect, but they were pioneers and that makes them great. Greetings.

Although I haven't seen this movie personally(being far too young to really enjoy it), I've heard from older friends and relatives that it was a real classic. I've only seen Creed 1 and 2 where Rocky was a character and his past was explored. From the story of Creed, I can tell that Rocky was a good movie. Maybe it was even better than Creed. I can't say🙃
creed is a really good sequel, it knows how to fairly adapt the Spirit of this one, while working perfectly on a modern setting

Despite the countless "great" movies after Rocky, it still manages to be one of the few classics that stand above majority of the great "modern" ones.
I have not seen Rocky, but with your perspective to it's impeccable standard, even at its time, there's now a little more light shone on why it is still one of the great classics.
As you have said, the directors and writers may not have they forever a work of art, but Rocky seems to be standing firm.
