A few months ago when I was just starting at Hive I wrote a short review where I explained my thoughts about The Irishman: one of my favorite movies, the thing is that after having seen it again (As part of my new Christmas tradition) I felt that It was a good opportunity to renew this post, including thoughts a little more updated about it.
The Irishman is one of those films that just don't need an introduction, released in 2019 and directed by the great Martin Scorsese, we are in front of a piece of unmatched historical value that manages to be extremely entertaining at the same time.
Bringing together three of the greatest actors that have ever existed in contemporary cinema (Robert DeNiro, Alpacino and Joe Pesci) The Irishman serves as a love letter to all lovers of gangster cinema and a meta-commentary on the consequences of a life full of crimes and excesses such as those that were portrayed so attractively in the previous works of this filmmaker.
If films like Goodfellas, Casino or Wolf Of Wall Street himself constantly rejoiced in contrasting the lives of ordinary men with those of the criminals who starred them, The Irishman is an indirect response to all this, a wake up call that shows us that the cost of crime will always be very high.
From its beautiful and depressing opening mimicking the sustained shots of Goodfellas (Only in an infinitely murkier context) to the intimate access to the lives of its characters, the true story of Frank Sheeran and Jimmy Hoffa serves as a vessel for what is likely to be be one of the most thematically dense films Scorsese has ever made: evaluating the value of family, loyalty, and the terrifying idea of growing old with no one by our side.
For the common viewer the relevant points of the film are scarce, they talk about the length of its duration or the defects in its (in my opinion) brilliant visual effects. The Irishman is much more than that, it is a show that takes us by the hand throughout the life of a man like Frank Sheeran organically, while coldly making us question all the decisions that he has made.
It does not spend time making things glamorous or anything, although it’s presented in an elegant way it also knows how to be raw and moving. A masterpiece that evokes nostalgia and disappointment in almost equal amounts.
Hace unos meses cuando recién estaba empezando en Hive redacté una breve reseña en donde exponía mis pensamientos respecto a The Irishman: una de mis películas favoritas, la cosa es que luego de haberla visto otra vez (Como parte de mi nueva tradición navideña) sentí que era una buena oportunidad para renovar dicho post, incluyendo pensamientos un poco más actualizados el respecto.
The Irishman es una de esas películas que simplemente no necesitan introducción, estrenada en el año 2019 y dirigido por el gran Martin Scorsese, estamos frente a una pieza de un valor histórico inigualable que logra ser sumamente entretenida al mismo tiempo.
Reuniendo a tres de los actores más grandes que han existido en el cine contemporáneo (Robert DeNiro, Alpacino y Joe Pesci) The Irishman sirve como una carte de amor a todos los amantes del cine gangster y un meta-comentario a las consecuencias que supone una vida llena de crimenes y excesos como las que se retrataban de forma tan atractivas en las obras previas de este cineasta.
Si filmes como Goodfellas, Casino o el mismísimo Wolf Of Wall Street se regocijaban constantemente contrastando la vida de los hombres corrientes con las de los criminales que les protagonizaban, The Irishman es una respuesta indirecta a todo esto, un wake up call que nos muestra que el costo del crimen siempre sera muy elevado.
Desde su hermosa y deprimente apertura mimicando los planos sostenidos de Goodfellas (Solo que en un contexto infinitamente más turbio) hasta el acceso intimo a la vida de sus personajes, la historia real de Frank Sheeran y Jimmy Hoffa sirve como un recipiente para lo que probablemente sea una de las películas más densas temáticamente que Scorsese ha hecho en toda su vida: evaluando el valor de la familia, la lealtad y la idea terrorífica de envejecer sin nadie a nuestro lado.
Para el espectador común los puntos relevantes del filme son escasos, se habla de lo extenso de su duración o de los defectos en sus (a mi parecer) brillantes efectos visuales. The Irishman es mucho más que eso, es un espectáculo que nos lleva de la mano a lo largo de toda la vida de un hombre como Frank Sheeran orgánicamente, a la vez que fríamente nos hace cuestionar todas las decisiones que ha tomado.
No gasta tiempo glamourizano nada, aunque se presenta de forma elegante también sabe ser cruda y conmovedora. Una obra maestra que evoca nostalgia y decepciones en cantidades casi iguales.

Excelente recomendación, y sobretodo por estos extraordinarios actores, que ya no hay tantos como ellos hoy en día. Nunca había escuchado sobre esta película, pero se ve que es realmente buena, sobretodo ese aspecto de los gansters en su vejez, porque a veces uno quisiera imaginar como seria su vida sin tener esa juventud vigorizante que los hacia malos y poderosos.
Es una película bastante buena y me encanta su mensaje final, es un poco larga y eso puede echar para atrás a mucha gente, no obstante, yo siento que es genial 😁
I saw this movie when it was released. I've been looking forward to it since it was announced, I was very curious to see Pacino working with Scorsese. It was great. I have to see it again.

Muy buena reseña! Incluso me haces considerar echarle un segundo vistazo, porque debo admitir que la primera vez que la ví, quedé entre los que mencionas que critican su duración y sus efectos jajaja
El digitalmente rejuvenecido De Niro nunca me terminó de gustar, sentí que hubiera sido mucho mejor elegir a un actor joven pues los movimientos de Robert delataban su avanzada edad casi siempre, sin mencionar que se me acababa viendo muy irreal en muchas ocasiones.
Igualmente valoré cualidades como la fotografía y su mensaje, aunque reconozco que quizás no al mismo detalle que tú en este artículo. Quizás eventualmente le de una segunda oportunidad a este filme que prometía tanto para mí.
