La Vie en Rose, also known in France as La Môme, is a french autobiographical film about the life of Edith Piaf, one of France's most influential and important singers, who had a devastating yet fascinating life that ultimately ended in tragedy. Her most famous song is titled just like the movie, a song that is still relevant today due to multiple covers by well-known singers.
This film is without a doubt one of my favorites of its genre, having one of the best performances I've ever seen in my life, and one of the most well-deserved Oscars in the category of best actress in a leading role.
A Fascinating Story
This is a non-linear film, in which we jump from different eras of Edith Piaf's life. Our heroine is a prodigy who has sung ever since she was a child. Her life is a bizarre one right from the start, being the daughter of an acrobat and a street singer, she is raised by prostitutes in a brothel owned by her grandmother. While she is still a child, his father takes her to the circus, profiting from her singing and making her his biggest moneymaker.
She starts a life in which her main source of income is singing in the streets until a wealthy man discovers her beautiful voice and decides to make her France's biggest star.
We follow Edith's journey until the very end of her life, the making of one of France's main icons, how she falls in love, and most importantly, her decline as she struggles with drugs and desperate need for affection.
The Performance of a Lifetime
Marion Cotillard's performance as Edith Piaf is one that I consider among the greatest I've ever seen. She becomes Edith, disappearing in her role and giving her all in each scene, making our protagonist likable and complex even as she becomes bitter and angry, we can't help but sympathize with her.
I can't? Then what's the point of being Edith Piaf?
I'd also like to make emphasize the cinematography of this film as the cinematographer Tetsuo Nagata manages to make a gorgeous environment full of meaning. The colors are bright and provide a surrealistic image of Edith's life, there is something harsh and bold in each one of the scenes as if they were, like Edith, begging to be seen.
I must admit that I became a fan of Edith after this movie, each song is not played randomly but in very carefully crafted scenes, and I'd like to point out the very final scene of this film, as it is magnificent and we are shown an amazing last performance.
An Amazing Experience You'll Never Forget
This is a heartwrenching film that will make you listen to La Vie en Rose and remember this Edith Piaf's life. The message that this movie tries to convey is to live with no regrets, doing it all, giving it your all, even as the world tries to bring you down.
I hope you watch this film in case you haven't, as it is truly one of the best biopics I've ever seen.

I was impressed by the depth to which the script covered her story. It was very beautiful and emotional. This is one of Marion Cotillard's best works.
Marion Cotillard is an amazing actress, she stands out in each one of her works. This movie is definitely one of my favorite biopics, a genre that I must admit I like very much (maybe because if a biographical film is not that good, at least you learned something new). The final scene of this movie gave me chills.
