Cool World es una película del año 1992, dirigida por Ralph Bakshi (máximo exponente de la animación para adultos), interpretada por Brad Pitt, Gabriel Byrne y Kim Basinger y que muestra a actores reales interactuando con dibujos animados, al estilo de otras películas de la época como ¿Quién Engañó a Roger Rabbit? y Space Jam. La historia sigue dos subtramas: la de Frank Harris, un humano que llega a un mundo de caricatura conocido como Cool World y se convierte en detective del mismo, y la de Jack Deebs, caricaturista que dice haber creado al Cool World y sueña con pasar una noche con la femme fatale animada Holli Would. Ambas subtramas coincidirán en un evento que podría acabar con el mundo humano y el mundo de caricaturas.
Cool World se presenta como una variante más adulta de otras películas de su estilo como las ya mencionadas ¿Quién Engañó a Roger Rabbit? y Space Jam, caracterizándose por su uso de la violencia, el sexo y el humor negro, además de ser mucho más irreverente y grotesca. Esto se ve reflejado en sus diseños de personajes y escenarios, siendo oscuros, estrafalarios y decadentes; presentando también una visión mucho más ácida y agresiva de las caricaturas.
Por el lado de la escritura, Cool World se muestra bastante ágil al alternar las subtramas que rigen la historia y dándole toques de Cine Negro, generando personajes peculiares y entretenidos de ver, muy bien interpretados en el caso de Pitt y Byrne, aunque por el lado de Basinger su actuación deja mucho que desear por ser sobreactuada.
Igualmente, la película presenta distintas fallas: por el lado visual, la interacción entre humanos y caricaturas puede llegar a sentirse poco creíble o trabajada, a diferencia de otros ejemplos ya mencionados que usan esta técnica. Por otro lado, se generan muchas pausas innecesarias para ver momentos de humor físico entre caricaturas que no aportan nada significativo a lo que sucede. Y en su tercer acto o etapa de cierre, Cool World se siente desmandada, que va sin control o conciencia.

The story follows two subplots: that of Frank Harris, a human who arrives in a cartoon world known as Cool World and becomes a detective there, and that of Jack Deebs, a cartoonist who claims to have created Cool World and dreams of spending a night with animated femme fatale Holli Would. Both subplots will coincide in an event that could end both the human world and the cartoon world.
Cool World is presented as a more adult variant of other films of its style such as the aforementioned Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Space Jam, characterized by its use of violence, sex and black humor, as well as being much more irreverent and grotesque. This is reflected in its character and scenery designs, being dark, bizarre and decadent; also presenting a much more acid and aggressive vision of cartoons.
On the writing side, Cool World is quite agile in alternating the subplots that govern the story and giving it touches of Film Noir, generating peculiar and entertaining characters to watch, very well interpreted in the case of Pitt and Byrne, although on the side of Basinger her performance leaves much to be desired for being overacted.
Likewise, the film has several flaws: on the visual side, the interaction between humans and caricatures can feel not very credible or worked, unlike other examples already mentioned that use this technique. On the other hand, there are many unnecessary pauses to see moments of physical humor between caricatures that do not contribute anything significant to what is happening. And in its third act or closing stage, Cool World feels rampant, going without control or conscience.
