Hello movie lovers, It may seem a little odd to some but I’ve found horror movies pretty interesting since I was a kid, especially the ones that use science fiction or a paranormal phenomenon to develop the plot, that’s probably why there are certain tropes that annoy me a lot and end up ruining these type of films for me, I thought this could make an interesting topic to share with you: the five things I detest the most about horror movies.
Saludos fanáticos del cine, puede que algunos lo encuentren un poco extraño pero desde que era pequeño el género de las películas de terror me parece bastante interesante, especialmente las películas que utilizan elementos de ciencia ficción o fenómenos paranormales para desarrollar sus historias, sin embargo me ha tocado ver varias cintas que utilizan ciertos elementos que han terminando arruinándome por completo la experiencia, así que pensé que podría ser un tema interesante compartir con ustedes cuáles son las cinco cosas que más detesto que pasen en las películas de terror.
Overuse of cheap scares | Abusar de los sustos fáciles
I noticed that this has been happening for some years in horror films, the overuse of this trope to provoke jump-scares in the viewer, but this type of fear just makes the scares become progressively predictable and tiring, to me a good horror movie has to build the right atmosphere of fear and suspense, little by little, causing the sense of paranoia that one may experience while seeing something and not being sure if it’s truly there or not in the screen, making use of the silence, sound effects and subtly disturbing melodies, I consider there’s nothing more unsettling than the audiovisual horror of seeing something that causes intrigue and makes you think about it even after you’re done watching it.
Desde hace varios años he notado que en muchas películas de terror abusan del uso de este recurso para intentar provocar sobresaltos fáciles en el espectador, sin embargo en lugar de provocar miedo lo que terminan haciendo es que los sustos progresivamente se vuelvan predecibles y cansinos, verán para mí una buena película de este género debe construir su atmosfera de horror y suspenso lentamente, haciendo hincapié en la sensación de paranoia que uno pueda sentir con lo que se esté o no viendo en pantalla, todo esto apoyándose en el silencio, efectos de sonido y melodías sutilmente inquietantes, considero que no hay nada más perturbador en una obra audiovisual de terror que presenciar algo que te deje intrigado y pensado incluso después de que hayas terminado de verla.
Overly clumsy characters | Personajes increíblemente torpes
This is probably the one thing I detest the most when watching a horror movie, I never understood the obsession of scriptwriters of making the characters act like idiots in a dangerous situation just for the sole purpose of creating more catastrophic events, I can believe that in a group there could be one person who is incompetent or clumsy, but making almost everyone act like an idiot and behave in illogical ways to create situations that only the scriptwriters can come up with seems too ridiculous for me, and I’ve had to watch a lot of films that do this, it just makes me laugh and I end up making fun of the characters. To me, a good horror movie is one where the characters are doing all they can to survive when facing any threat by making rational and smart decisions.
Este es quizá el aspecto que más detesto cuando veo una película de terror, nunca he comprendido ese afán de muchos guionistas de hacer que los personajes se comporten como imbéciles ante situaciones de peligro con el solo propósito de forzar más sucesos catastróficos, a ver puedo dejar pasar que en un grupo de personajes haya uno torpe e incompetente que provoque algún evento desafortunado, pero hacer que todos o casi todos ellos realicen las acciones más idiotas y carentes de lógica que se les puedan ocurrir es algo que simplemente no puedo soportar, de hecho casi siempre que me ha tocado ver películas de terror en donde suceden estas cosas, lo que termino haciendo es burlarme de lo estúpidos que son sus personajes. Para mí una buena película de terror, es aquella donde los personajes hacen todo lo posible para intentar sobrevivir ante las amenazas tomando decisiones racionales y coherentes.
Inconclusive endings | El final inconcluso
Something that a lot of movies seem to go for after the final confrontation where the surviving characters manage to miraculously defeat the final threat or survive it, is that instead of giving a real ending to the story we just finished watching, we get revealed in the final seconds that the monster, psychopath or ghost is still alive to continue causing chaos and for a sequel hook. This seems to me like a terrible idea because in most cases is done simply to create a franchise of movies that will end up becoming too long, repetitive and boring.
Algo recurrente en muchas películas de terror es que después de que termina la gran confrontación final contra la amenaza de turno, donde el o los personajes logran milagrosamente acabar o sobrevivir a ella, en vez de darle una conclusión a la historia que acabamos de presenciar, en los últimos segundos de la cinta nos revelan que inexplicablemente el psicópata, fantasma o monstruo sigue con vida para seguir haciendo de las suyas en una presunta secuela. Esto me parece una pésima idea, porque en la mayoría de los casos es solo con la finalidad de crear una saga de películas que a la larga termina volviéndose repetitiva y aburrida.
Out of nowhere sex scenes | Escenas de sexo fuera de contexto
In the majority of the worst horror movies I’ve ever seeing there’s always something like this, when the characters are going through something terrible and anguishing we see them find a place and out of nowhere, they start having sex, I guess to make it easier for the entity, ghost or killer to take advantage of the situation and kill them like a pair of idiots. Really, who in their sound mind would do something like that in a dangerous situation where something or someone is chasing them?
En la mayora de las peores películas de terror que he visto, siempre tiene que suceder esto, cuando algunos personajes están atravesando por momentos angustiantes de la nada vemos como encuentran un sitio y deciden ponerse a tener sexo para que el psicópata, entidad fantasmal o lo que sea aproveche la situación y los asesine como a unos pobres idiotas, definitivamente a quien en su sano juicio se le ocurriría hacer eso estando consciente de que algo peligroso los está asechando de cerca.
The unbelievable skeptic character | El personaje exageradamente escéptico
In many horror movies there’s always a character that doesn’t believe any of the things happening around him or her, it tends to be the boyfriend or husband of a female protagonists. To be clear, I don’t think this is always bad because it can make sense for some people to not believe in a strange phenomenon or similar thing that easily, the issue is when the writers continuously make all the strange occurrences happen while the skeptic character is never present to be a witness, or in some of the worst cases, they make the character deny these things that are happening in front of everyone’s eyes and behave as if nothing out of the ordinary is occurring.
En muchas películas de terror siempre hay un personaje que no cree nada de lo que está pasando, por lo general se trata del hombre que es pareja de la protagonista, a ver esto no me parece del todo malo porque tiene sentido que algunas personas no crean de buenas a primeras en fenómenos extraños o cosas por el estilo, el problema se presenta cuando en estas historias se abusa de las conveniencias y hacen que el personaje escéptico nunca sea testigo de los momentos donde suceden cosas extrañas o en el peor de los casos, por más que las presencien hacen caso omiso de ellas y se comportan como si nada extraño estuviese pasando.

Me encantó tu lista y coincido totalmente con ella, sobre todo en ese recurso innecesario donde los personajes se besan o tienen sexo, en un momento completamente fuera de lugar, se supone que en un momento de tensión, cada músculo y cada sentido debería estar preparado para atacar, defenderse o huir, no para perder el tiempo y bajarla guardia 😠. También odio eso de los personajes terriblemente torpes, que salen corriendo y se caen como cinco veces, creo que esto genera mucha frustración en el espectador, así como los autos que no encienden cuando el personaje quiere huir despavorido 🤦♀ 😱.
