A brief summary and my opinion about What If | The first Marvel animated experience I knew about

English version below

image.png

image.png

¿Conocen a Thanos?

Hubieron zombies

image.png

Killmonger salvó a Tony Stark

image.png

¿Recuerdan a Arnim Zola?

image.png

Mi opinión y teorías

Bueno, siento que he contado todo lo que es relevante dentro de What If, así que ahora quiero dar mi opinión acerca de esta serie:

image.png

[ENG/ESP] Review - Avengers: Age of Ultron

boom.

image.png

Small note: Some images are in a different resolution because I had a change of monitor while writing this post XD

image.png

Hey, hi everyone, before I start I'd like to point out that if you haven't seen What If, please do so before reading this review. This will be completely full of spoilers as there are a lot of topics I want to talk about and I have no idea how I can cover them without spoiling much of the series haha. Anyway, the series has been on for months now since it was finished airing so I'd be surprised if anyone hasn't seen it XD.

Let's start.

What If is an animated series that began airing in August 2021 and is the first animated series that the current Marvel Cinematic Universe has aired (or so I think). At first I was extremely repulsed to watch it since it was an animated series, my brain thought that it was basically a series for kids and that they only wanted to attract the children's audience with this kind of strategy.

As always: I was absolutely wrong.

What If not only ended up being a completely amazing series, but it's a series that added a hell of a lot better backstory to everything that's happening within the Marvel universe and incredibly ended up connecting to the events happening in the movies and series we saw with real actors. It's a complete madness that I want to give my opinion about and also my theories, so: here we go.

image.png

This series does not take place in an already known dimension, this series shows how different the world would have been if one of the important events in the life of superheroes had changed.

What do I mean by this?

To exemplify this, let's go back to the first episode entitled: **What if Captain Carter had been the first Avenger?

In this episode we can see how the common events of Captain America 1 were happening, but Captain Carter decided to stay inside the compartment where they were doing the transformation of Rogers and she tried to prevent a Hydra infiltrator from damaging the project. Everything failed but Captain Carter decided to enter the machine to become the new Captain America (although it is weird because she was never referenced in this way in the chapter, just Captain Carter).

image.png

The rest of the episode was a brief demonstration of how Captain Carter did all of Steve Rogers' accomplishments in his base universe, but there are a series of events that I didn't understand at all. I'm not going to recount the whole episode, but the most relevant thing happened exactly at the end of the episode, exactly when this enemy showed up on the scene:

image.png

These tentacles came out after Red Skull managed to make use of the Tesseract (the space gem) and from there these tentacles came out. He named this monster as The Champion of Hydra, but I don't understand how they managed to summon a monster of such magnitude (this monster is far more dangerous than the Chitauri).

But who the fuck is this monster?

I'm talking about the mighty Shuma-Gorath.

image.png
source chan uwu

Everything points to these tentacles appearing to be the tentacles of Shuma-Gorath, and this is when I wonder: how did Hydra manage to try to summon such an absurdly abysmal monster? As could be seen in the episode, a few tentacles barely made it through the portal. If this monster had come through that portal, I'm pretty sure it would have wiped out all existence on earth and in that specific universe (yes, Shuma-Gorath is a multiversal threat).

And this was just the first episode..

I honestly don't want to do a post explaining EVERY single episode because if I keep going at this pace, I'll end up doing a post of about 4500 words and honestly it's not something I want to do XD (not only because it will exhaust me excessively, it's also impractical for me to make someone spend 40 minutes reading a blog post).

Anyway, I will try to briefly describe each episode because this is important for the rest of the series (or at least for the ending).

image.png

image.png

In the second episode there is another change in the timeline as here instead of Peter Quill being Star Lord, T'achalla (Black Panther) was in the wrong place at the wrong times and they thought this was Star Lord. After this confusion he was Star Lord's replacement and basically the two are very similar, only T'achalla seems much more skilled at stealing, which doesn't surprise me since T'achalla comes from a fairly advanced earth and was generally better than an ordinary human (it should be noted that at this point T'achalla was not yet turned into Black Panther, so he had no powers).

Have you met Thanos - the formidable foe who made Iron Man sacrifice himself in Engdame?

Well, he became friendly and worked for Star Lord after I gave him a speech on why eradicating half the universe wouldn't be a good idea.

lol.

image.png

In the third episode nothing interesting happens, here they only show us how the Avengers die in a timeline. The cause of all this ended up being Hank Pynn because he wanted to take revenge because his daughter Hope had died in a quantum journey (or so I think, I didn't watch the episode again, but I do know that the daughter died XD).

There was nothing relevant here, only Nick Fury who defeated Pynn with the help of Loki since his brother Thor was also dead. At the end of the episode Loki betrays Fury and starts an operation to rule the planet Earth (no one can be trusted here).

And here is one of the most important events in the series.

image.png

In episode 4 of the series we are introduced to Doctor Strange. A character that is very relevant within the UCM, especially with the very close Multiverse of Madness movie where I am absolutely sure that many, many iconic characters will be brought in and this is where EVERYTHING that the series and the UCM has been creating for a very long time will be related.

Strange in this episode loses his love Christine in a car accident (in the timeline we know Strange loses his hands) and he never managed to recover from that accident. In this episode Strange slowly becomes a dark being who does everything he can to reverse the accident, which he cannot do easily since it is a time loop, a nexus event that is simply destined to happen in every possible way. Christine's death was something already decided by the fate of that universe and Strange could not reverse that.

Or so it was believed.

image.png

Strange spent centuries absorbing monsters from different worlds and as his last saucer he devoured a small part of Shuma-Gorath, yes, the multiversal monster I mentioned a bit above. This Strange is simply a character with immeasurable power and could basically do whatever he wanted in his entire universe. Then another variant of himself tried to stop him and was also absorbed, what they were monstering us with was insane.

Strange managed to reverse the Nexus Event, but this meant corrupting his entire universe due to the number of times he had manipulated time, so the entire universe collapsed (and Strange with all his power tried to stop the collapse). He did not die, but was locked in his universe.

It is also here where we are shown the first character who managed to have communication with The Watcher.

Oh, I forgot to mention who is he.

image.png
Oh yeah source pls

The Watcher is the narrator who tells us the whole story behind these alternate lines and is also a multiversal entity that no one can see unless you get to a cosmic level. Strange manages to see The Watcher and also establish communication with him at the end of the episode, but he cannot help him as he has a promise that he is only there to watch, he cannot interfere in any universe in any way.

After episode 4 I completely fell in love with the series because of all the plot I was having but I also found out that there is quite a bit of "filler" that really don't have much to do with the main story (or at least what this series is trying to convey.

There were zombies

image.png

Killmonger saved Tony Stark

image.png

Thor did a party and Captain Marvel didn't like it

image.png

Really crazy things happened, but the craziest thing of all happened at the end of chapter 7 (where Thor throws a party).

Until he arrived:

image.png

This character you see here is Ultron, the version of Ultron that should have existed in the UCM and the one that, in my opinion, gives you the best representation of what this villain should have been. Ultron is an A.I. that seeks to exterminate as much life as possible because it is the only way to achieve true peace, but the Ultron of this universe managed to get ALL of the infinity gems.

All this happens in chapter 8..

image.png

Chapter 8 is definitely one of my favorites because it had some of the most incredible scenes in the entire series, In the screenshot above Hawkeye sacrifices himself to save Black Widow and also save the only chance to defeat Ultron.

Remember Arnim Zola? He makes his appearance in Winter Soldier and is exactly the same thing that appears in What If, an analog machine that basically outperforms any computerized system, so this was the key to defeating Ultron.

image.png

Ultron in this universe managed to recover his original body (Vision's body) and thus managed to become an unstoppable machine since he had the soul gem. Once he ended life on earth, Thanos appeared to execute his plan to exterminate half the universe and was easily annihilated by Ultron. He basically ripped him in half in just seconds, proving just how powerful Vision was in the UCM (and it's never explained why he was so weak).

Once he had all the infinity gems, he wiped out all life in the universe after wiping out all the races we know. According to The Watcher, Ultron reached an incredibly high level of consciousness and was able to see and hear The Watcher and that is how he broke the barrier of the multiverse.

image.png

It is here where the series begins to take a 360° turn because all the characters we saw in previous chapters served to found the Guardians of the Multiverse. They are made up of Captain Carter, Gamora, Killmonger, Dr Strange, T'achalla, Thor and The Watcher.

Oh, and yes, Ultron managed to break the multiversal barrier and entered the dimension where The Watcher could visualize all multiversal lines. He got this power thanks to all the infinity gems and became a cosmic being.

image.png

My opinion and some theories

Well, I feel that I have told everything that is relevant within What If, so now I want to give my opinion about this series:

image.png

At the beginning I was very hard on this series as I really had no hope that it would be something that would catch my attention or be very good compared to series that had already come out (I think Loki came before What If, I don't remember very well). So, going into the animated world without any justification? Why do that?

This to me was the best thing Marvel could have done to make a series that messed with the multiverse since, I assume it would have been a million times more expensive to make a series with real people instead of making this animated. Aside from that, I feel like the effects used in this series are exceedingly good and I can't imagine how they would have managed to make it look as epic in a movie. I know CGI is currently being used quite a bit and is an ideal tool for many, many movies (especially Marvel where we are talking about superheroes), but it's not good for the eyes to see how CGI is so noticeable, it just takes away the sense of realism that we wanted to see with our eyes.

In contrast, this is completely different in an animated series, and Marvel applied it incredibly well..

image.png

The animation is also a really amazing job all around. I don't know why all the drawing in this series gives me the feeling that I've seen it somewhere else, but all the animation in general gives a pretty fresh feel and feels a hell of a lot more alive. I wish at some point anime would decide to try different animation styles, but at what point does an anime stop being an anime and become an animated series? I guess that's a question our friend @syberia could answer with his otaku powers.

The surprise aspect they used in this series was a good punch to keep the attention on it in the middle of all the chapters, but apparently there was some kind of mess or rushed decisions since there were chapters that were eliminated (for example, Gamora's chapter next to Tony Stark). Why would they make this kind of changes? I feel that the inclusion of Gamora in the team without any justification since she had not appeared in the series before (well, she appeared next to T'achalla, but there are not 2 characters from the same universe in the Guardians of the Multiverse team).

image.png

The whole presentation of Ultron as an antagonist was ABSOLUTELY CRAZY. They went to incredible lengths to fix the grave mistake they made in Age of Ultron and this time gave him the villain position he truly deserved.

I recommend this post by @alejandroaldana where he talks more in depth about the mistake made by Marvel regarding why they wasted Ultron in a rather disappointing way. [ENG/ESP] Review - Avengers: Age of Ultron

Every appearance of Ultron represented fear and also dominance, the whole character design was just insane and that fusion between Vision's body and Ultron's armor make it completely indimidating. It's quite peculiar that Ultron's armor had places to embed the Infinity Gems, I guess once he got the gems he assumed how they were used.

image.png

Ultron was a multiversal threat and had the ability to do ANYTHING he wanted within the universe and that seemed more than enough to give him respect, but Doctor Strange was also a character who got the spot he deserved. This Doctor Strange was basically the one who did a 1v1 against Ultron and managed to beat him despite having ALL the Infinity Gems.

You know what the best part is? In the Multiverse of Madness trailer you can see a much more haggard Strange with a completely different style (dark shades everywhere), do you know what this means?

What If is completely related to the UCM.

boom.

It is here where Marvel has made the ultimate check and has shown enough strength to create a fictional universe by putting together movies with real people and also with animated series. All the events that have been happening in the series and in the various movies are geared towards a unique story. I'm completely thrilled to be able to see something as unique as Secret Wars was and also have the opportunity to see characters as absurdly strong as Galactus or Sentry.

By the way, in What If there was a reference to Galactus.

image.png

I feel that this was undoubtedly AN AMAZING JOB despite being the first animated series that the current UCM has done. The truth is that What If was a series that completely revolutionized how we viewed the Marvel universe and opened the doors to endless different opportunities.

I've heard that a second season of What If is coming soon, so I can't wait for them to keep integrating even more epic stories and new characters.

Marvel is up to something huge, and I'm glad I live in the right era to enjoy it.

Thanks for reading.

Justice Dark league ambas pelis, The Dark night returns y Redson :)

Ah no pues, te wa banear 😡

Hey! Most images are screenshots I took myself while watching the series again. I put the source of the images that are not mine :P
