I Kill Giants
It's a thriller, drama and fantasy film based on the graphic novel by Ken and Kelly Niimura. It stars Madison Wolfe (as Barbara Thorson) as a quirky teenager who hunts and kills giants. This is a very strange story, that keeps you constantly in expectation and with lots of questions, it's one of those movies where they limit themselves to reveal little information thus awakening curiosity and at the same time you can't wait for that something will make you say "ahhh I get it."
Es una película de suspenso, drama y fantasía, basada en la novela gráfica de Ken y Kelly Niimura. Es protagonizada por Madison Wolfe (como Bárbara Thorson) que interpreta a una adolescente bastante peculiar que se dedica a cazar y matar gigantes. Esta una historia bastante extraña, que te mantiene constantemente a la expectativa y con muchísimas preguntas, es de esas películas donde se limitan a revelar poca información despertando así la curiosidad y a su vez no puedes esperar por ese algo que te hará decir "ahhh ya entiendo".
The story is based on this girl who goes beyond being an outsider, she is kind of an outcast by choice, but she isn't the typical fearful namby-pamby that they usually show, on the contrary, she is a girl with a pretty sharp tongue, agile mind, intelligent, very impulsive and tactless. She lives with her older sister who is the one who holds the reins of the family, and also a brother with whom she doesn't get along well at all. Honestly the relationship between her and her sister doesn't go very well, because she doesn't give others a chance to get close to her.
La historia se basa en esta niña que va más allá de ser extrana, es una especie de marginada por elección, pero no es la típica ñoña temerosa que suelen mostrar, al contrario, es una chica con una lengua bastante afilada, mente ágil, inteligente, muy impulsiva y carente de tacto. Vive con su hermana mayor que es la que lleva las riendas de la familia, y también un hermano con el que no se lleva nada bien. Honestamente la relación entre ella y su hermana no marcha muy bien, porque ella no le da oportunidad a los demás para acercarse a ella.
She meets a girl named Sophia who has just moved from England. Sophia does everything she can to get closer to her, as strange and confusing as her actions are, she does not miss the opportunity to talk to her in order to establish a friendship, but it isn't easy. It's not that Barb is an inhibited girl, she just seems to wanna be alone in her own world and the truth is that her excess of distrust towards others is palpable, making things even more difficult.
Conoce a una niña llamada Sophia que acaba de mudarse desde Inglaterra. Sophia hace todo lo posible por acercarse a ella, por más extraña y confusas que son sus acciones, ella no pierde la oportunidad de hablarle con el fin de entablar una amistad, pero no lo tiene nada fácil, no es que Barb sea una chica inhibida, es que simplemente parece querer estar sola en su propio mundo y la verdad es que su exceso de desconfianza hacía los demás es palpable, dificultando aun más las cosas.
From the beginning of the movie I must admit what made me watch it to the end was the personality of the protagonist and as I mentioned before because of the "little information" they reveal, I wanted to understand the reasons for her behavior, but at the beginning because of the lack of information and context you will feel that you don't understand what is going on, and why she reacted in such an irrational way when they mentioned certain topics like "baseball" and her mother, of which you don't know anything until after the movie is VERY advanced. And although Barbara seems to have this obsession with the giants, the truth is that once they are shown it doesn't last very long, by this I mean the fantasy part of the film is not very present.
Desde el inicio de la película debo admitir que lo que me hizo verla hasta el final fue la personalidad de la protagonista y como mencione antes por la "poca información" que revelan quería entender las razones de su comportamiento, pero al principio por la falta de información y contexto sentirás que no entiendes lo que pasa, y porqué reaccionaba de una manera tan irracional cuando mencionaban ciertos temas como el "béisbol" y su madre, de la cual no se sabe nada hasta después de que la película va MUY avanzada. Y aunque Bárbara parece tener esta obsesión con los gigantes, la verdad es que una vez que los muestran no dura mucho, con esto quiero decir que la parte fantasiosa de la película no esta muy presente.
Throughout this film you will wonder, does she really fight with giants or does Barbara just imagine everything that happens? As well as this other series of questions, because as illogical as many things may seem, the truth is that Barbara doesn't seem to be a girl with any mental problem, she is completely functional, she doesn't seem to care at all what anyone thinks or says about her at all, in fact she admits more than once that she is a "freak" and gives the impression at all times that she accepts herself for who she is and she'll save them all from the giants no matter what.
A lo largo de este filme te preguntarás ¿en serio lucha con gigantes o Bárbara se imagina todo lo que ocurre? Así como esta otra serie de preguntas, porque por más ilógicas que parezcan muchas cosas, la verdad es que Bárbara no parece ser una chica con algún problema mental, ella es completamente funcional, no parece importarle para nada lo que piensan o digan de ella en lo absoluto, de hecho ella admite más de una vez que es un "bicho raro" y da la impresión en todo momento que se acepta por quien es y sin importar nada ella va a salvarlos a todos de los gigantes.
Other main characters in this story is a new psychologist who arrived at the school, Mrs. Mollé. Like Sophia she tries to connect with Barb, but she puts up resistance. Since the first time she is summoned by the psychologist, Barbara expresses her lack of interest, first she refuses to talk, she only listening to Mrs. Mollé and when she finally does, she points out all the mistakes the psychologist made in her attempt to help her. Mrs. Mollé realizes with a sigh this will be one of her biggest challenges, yet she doesn't give up, she insists on doing what she can in order to help her.
Otros de los personajes principales de esta historia es una nueva psicóloga que llegó a la escuela, la Sra. Mollé. Al igual que Sophia ella intenta conectar con Barb, pero opone resistencia. Desde que fue citada por primera vez por la psicóloga, Bárbara expresa su falta de interés, primero se rehúsa a hablar solo se limita a escuchar a la Sra. Mollé y cuando finalmente lo hace no hace más que puntualizar todos los errores que cometió la psicóloga en su intento por ayudarla. La Sra. Mollé entre suspiros se da cuenta que este será uno de sus mayores retos, aún así no se rinde, insiste en hacer lo posible por ayudarla.
Another theme present in this film is bullying, due to the impression Barbara gives and the fact that she is always alone, it isn't surprising that people try to bully her, but thanks to her personality, no matter how many times they try to bully her, she stands up to them. Without resorting to violence she just expresses very sincerely and without a hint of subtlety what she thinks of Taylor, the problem girl at school who never misses an opportunity to tease and pick on her.
Otro de los temas presentes en esta película es el "bullying" debido a la impresión que da Bárbara y a que siempre se encuentra sola, no es de sorpenderse que intenten molestarla, pero gracias a su personalidad sin importar cuantas veces intentan molestarla ella les hace frente. Sin necesidad de recurrir a la violencia ella solo expresa muy sinceramente y sin una pizca de sutileza lo que piensa de Taylor, la chica problema de la escuela que nunca pierde una oportunidad para molestarla y meterse con ella.
I'm pretty sure most people who saw this movie didn't understand the story and didn't decipher the why of a lot of things, in my case more were the things I liked compared to the things I didn't. I can't say it was one of the best movies I saw, but still, I know I would watch it again. The script was what I liked the most, the main character although I didn't know her she played her role very well, the fiction scenes were very good, and the message of the movie was also good, however, although I liked the lack of information, the story is somewhat confusing, and both the cover and the name of the movie make you think that it would be a movie focused on fantasy and I was expecting more of that.
Estoy seguro que la mayoría de las personas que vieron esta película no entendieron la historia y no descifraron el porqué de muchas cosas, en mi caso más fueron las cosas que gustaron en comparación con las que no. No puedo decir que fue una de las mejores películas que vi, pero aun así, sé que la volvería a ver. El libreto fue lo que más me gustó, la protagonista aunque la desconocía hizo muy bien su papel, las escenas de ficción estuvieron muy buenas, y el mensaje de la película también estuvo bueno, sin embargo, aunque me gustó la falta de información, la historia es algo confusa, y tanto la portada como el nombre de la película te hacen pensar que sería una película enfocada en la fantasía y esperaba más de eso.
If you are a fan of unusual and nerdy characters, as well as enjoy fantasy as well as some suspense, this is a good choice for you, particularly if you enjoy movies that are not at all predictable. Although the message of this story is for all audiences, I'm certain that it isn't for everyone, especially for those people who are not open-minded, and I also think that more than one will not finish watching the movie and even if they finish it most of them will not understand it, for these reasons I think it isn't a movie for everyone, but still, I invite you to find out if you like it or not.
Si eres un fanático de los personajes inusuales y nerds, además de disfrutar de la fantasía al igual que algo de suspenso, esta es una buena opción para tí, particularmente si disfrutas de las películas que no son predecibles del todo. Aunque el mensaje de esta historia es para todo público, tengo la certeza de que no es para todo el mundo, en especial para esas personas que no son de mente abierta, y también pienso que más de uno no va a terminar de ver la película y si la terminan de ver la mayoría no la entenderán, por estas razones opino que no es para todo el mundo, aún así te invito a descubrirlo, si es de tu agrado o no.

Let me tell you that's exactly what happened to me, I saw it and the first thing I thought was : "my god, the movie looks amazing!", but reading your review and knowing that it was based on a Japanese visual novel, I realized that it would be more focused on the girl's life than anything else.

Déjame decirte que eso fue exactamente lo que me pasó, la vi y lo primero que pensé fue :"dios mío, la película se ve increíble!", pero al leer tu reseña y al saber que se basaba en una novela visual japonesa, me di cuenta de que sería más centrada en la vida de la chica que en otra cosa.

Esta historia se ve muy interesante. No soy muy seguidor de producciones protagonizada por niños, pero lo que se ve en el poster y los fotogramas me llama la atención, voy a darle una mira al trailer, espero no destripe mucho la trama, para decidirme a verla.

Hace un buen tiempo vi este film, recuerdo que hasta hubo gente que la comparó con otra película que tiene una trama parecida, pero justamente a ser basada en un comic estrenado ya hace algún tiempo, esa critica no tenia ninguna importancia.
Me gusta mucho la historia, cada quien dependiendo como que debe vivir se creara un mundo para lidiar con muchas cosas y esta chica hizo justamente esto, ahora ¿Es algo sano? ¿Es real o fantasía? Son cosas que se responde muy bien en este film, es un buen drama que me hizo descubrir el trabajo de los creadores de la historia original y creo que a pesar de contar con cosas fantásticas como luchar con gigantes, creo que trata un tema real.
Es exactamente como dices, es un drama con algo de fantasía, pero enfocado en algo muy real con lo que todos debemos lidiar en algún momento de nuestra vida, tan solo que esta historia lo plasmaron de una forma única. Muchas gracias por tu comentario, saludos.

Me gusto esta peli y creo que fue una excelente manera de abordar este tipo de situaciones dramáticas que muchos niños tienen que aguantar. Creo que la peli se puede disfrutar más si se espera ver una producción del género de drama, a mí me encanto porque la manera en la que se muestra como la niña lidia con sus problemas fue excelente y poco común de ver, pero es necesario esperar drama y no tanto fantasía.
Yup, lo que hizo que sintiera que faltaba algo fue la idea de que la película sería más fantasiosa, si se ve con la idea de que es un drama con algo de fantasia definitivamente se disfrutaría mucho más, es lo que intenté dejar claro con esta review.
