Yesterday I reviewed the movie Ana (2020) on my post Show Me Some Hustle! [A Movie Review] and today I'm reviewing a movie with a similar title: Anna (2019)... Both movies are named after the main characters in the stories, Ana and Anna, but the similarities between them end there.
Anna (2019) is the latest movie directed by Luc Besson, one of my favourite directors. His story telling is always spectacular, usually full of twists and this movie is no exception.
In this story, Anna is a stunning blond diva who plays a double role as a Fashion Model living in Paris and a Russian Assassing Spy for the KGB, as well. She uses her beauty to get near her targets before finishing them off without any mercy.
The problem is... she didn't want this kind of life, so she is constantly trying to find a way out... but leaving the KGB is no simple feat. Will she succeed or will she die trying? I guess you'll have to watch the movie to find out because I am not going to spoil that for you. 🤫
Sasha Luss, who plays the role of Anna, is not a familiar name in the movie scene. In fact, this is the first movie she enters as the leading actress and she gave an amazing performance. It seems that Luc Besson has spent some time doing talent hunting, because he also picked up another rookie to play an important part in the movie: Lera Abova plays the role of Maude, Anna's girlfriend, and this is her debut in the cinema. I have a feeling we will see both of these ladies in a lot of movies in the future.
The rest of the cast is excellent, too. Helen Mirren, Luke Evans and Cillian Murphy deliver great performances.
The movie is filmed on several locations, the main ones being Moscow and Paris, two cities which provide great landscapes for the film.
Despite the main character being a cold-blooded assassin, Luc Besson makes the viewer get emotionally engaged and rooting for her all the way through. This is not an easy task.
There are no holes in the plot, as everything fits perfectly in place at the end. If you love action movies and spy stories with a great plot, this is a movie you should definitely watch.
I rate this picture with a 8 out of 10.
