Unlocked (2017) review - Good action that reminded me of 24!

Unlocked is something as strange as an action movie with quite a lot of famous actors from 2017, that I had never heard about before I noticed it on Netflix last week. It felt strange, after all, I do love a good action movie, and I do not understand how this can have passed by without me noticing it. My best guess is that Unlocked never came to cinemas in Hungary, and that is why I never had the chance to watch it. But, when I read the storyline and saw the actors, I decided quickly to stream it on Netflix. Was it worth it?

Noomi Rapace plays the roe as Alice Raine, a former agent that now works in an office for migrants. She is still helping the anti-terror squad whenever she discovers something that seems suspicious, but her life as an agent is over. Her good friend played by Toni Collette is the one she is reporting to, and their friendship will prove itself to be very important throughout the happenings of the movie.

The story

A courier is sent with a message from an imam to a believer. The believer is willing to act on any message given by the imam, and that is why it is very important to get the message through in the right way. But, what is the message of the courier? The courier is taken captive, and Aice Raine (Noomi Rapace) is brought in to do the interrogation, since nobody is better qualified than her. But, there is something wrong, because in the middle of the interrogation her superiors give her a call telling her that they will soon help her find the messenger. That leads to a different question - who is she with right now?

I will not share much more of the story right here as it is actually quite packed with cool twists, making the story interesting and something that you will want to follow all the way to the end. We also meet John Malkovich as her superior in the United States. He doesn't have a very big role, but it feels nice to have him there. He has had some busy years paying Poirot, trying to make the boring Space Force a little bit more interesting, helping out in the terror of Bird Box (with Sandra Bullock), and in this movie, playing the role of the leaders of FBI in the USA.

We also meet Michael Douglas who is a good friend of Alice, but also her former boss. And I almost forgot, Orlando Bloom is also playing a part in the movie. You know, the young and handsome guy from The Lord of the Rings. Well, he has aged a bit since then, and he actually reminded me more of Antonio Banderas the way he looked in this movie.

Action and a quite high pace

As I watched Unlocked on Netflix, I had a wonderful time. I love meaningless movies such as this one, with a quite normal plot, but still with action, some adrenaline, and some nice twists. Towards the end, I actually had the 24-feeling. If you have ever seen a season of 24 with Kiefer Sutherland, you know what I mean... always in a rush to stop a bomb, and with much happening and quite a lot of drama.

Noomi Rapace is doing a good job in the movie. If you don't know her, then you should watch the three Swedish movies in the Millenium series named The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. They made a Hollywood version of the same series, but it cannot be compared to the original Swedish series. She was also playing in the most recent season of Jack Ryan on Amazon, another TV series that I greatly enjoy.

If you like meaningless action, this is great!

Once again, this is not a fantastic movie with a special story. But, if you want adrenaline and action, this will do you very well. I had a great time.

Score: 8/10

I hope you have enjoyed the review. But, I would love to hear your thoughts about Unlocked. Have you seen it? Did you like it? Or did you just find it to be meaningless and not entertaining? I would love to hear your thoughts!

Where to watch Unlocked?

You will for sure find it in your local Apple Store or Google Play Store. You can also find it on Netflix in countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Hungary, Mexico, Netherlands, Sweden, South Korea, and many others.

Sort:

Not in netflix in the US... such bs!

Know the feeling... that's the way Netflix has to work with productions not their own. But, it for sure feels bad when you know there is a movie that you want to watch that is on Netflix in some other country, but not in your own.

I wonder if I can make a virtual network in another country to get around the IP. like a vpn!

You can, if you know someone with a computer there who will give you access... Or you can follow these instructions giving access to Netflix Singapore with VPN (https://www.ipaddressguide.org/netflix-singapore-abroad-is-it-possible/) - they will also help you access Dutch, Swedish, and South Korean Netfix)

Heck yea. Open source FTW!
