Hello, horror movie lovers!
I hope you are all well. Today I want to recommend a gem of British horror cinema from 2005. A claustrophobic and dark film, with terror and extreme survival, but which also explores what causes psychological trauma and the desperation to live. This film is called: The Descent.
This film tells the story of Sarah, Juno, and Beth, lifelong friends who devote their lives to caving (the practice of exploring and/or studying caves). But soon, Sarah's life turns into a tragedy when she suffers a terrible accident with her husband and daughter, in which she is the only survivor. A year after the tragedy, trying to save their friendship, Juno organizes an expedition to the Appalachian Mountains with Beth and three other girls.
The expedition was to a cave that had already been mapped, but what seemed like an adventure turns into a nightmare when a cave-in occurs and they are trapped. At first, they remain calm because the cave had maps and other exits, until they discover that Juno lied and took them to a different cave, an unexplored one, which Juno wanted to name in honor of Sarah.
As they struggle to survive in the darkness and find a way out, they discover that they are not alone, that it had been explored before, and that those who entered before them never came out, as the cave was inhabited by savage, blind humanoid creatures.
The film is not simply called “The Descent” because they descend into the depths of a cave, but because it has a psychological meaning. Descending into pain, trauma, guilt, and mistrust, while fear intensifies in a desperate situation, as creatures of horror begin to hunt them down bloodthirstily. The cave becomes the cage of their fears and the tomb of those who came before them.
All the protagonists are women, so two themes intersect: femininity and savagery. The main protagonists maintain a friendship marked by loss, guilt, and betrayal (Sarah, Beth, and Juno).
The creatures that inhabit the cave have undergone an evolutionary process in the darkness, and their origin and society give rise to several theories. They are impulsive, primitive, and beastly; in a way, they represent a world of isolation, degeneration, and extreme adaptation; even so, it is possible to fight them, although it seems more like a kind of massacre.
The atmosphere and visual style of the film are closed, oppressive, but enveloping; it is dark, but that does not prevent the scenes from being properly appreciated.
In the story, characters such as Sarah and Juno undergo a beastly transformation; the cave transforms them and they cease to be the people who entered it at the beginning. Sarah was already in hell before entering the cave, but it is in the cave that her pain deepens, while Juno is strong, tough, and cold, and her way of dealing with the situation is extreme.
The film is bloody, terrifying, and entertaining. The characters' desperation is palpable and voracious; the story itself is quite good and is handled correctly. The suspense unfolds as soon as they enter the cave, and the tension is overwhelming because those creatures suddenly appear and attack. The creatures, my goodness, are terrifying, and the first real glimpse of them can cause terror, so for a film from 20 years ago, it is incredibly well made. Something to think about is that the film initially gives rise to several theories, and the ending is simply incredible.

Espero que se encuentren bien. Hoy les quiero recomendar una joya del cine de terror británico del año 2005. Una película claustrofóbica y oscura, con terror y supervivencia extrema, pero que, además, explora lo que causa el trauma psicológico y la desesperación por vivir. Esta película se llama: El descenso.
Esta película nos cuenta la historia de Sarah, Juno y Beth, amigas de toda la vida que dedican su vida a la espeleología (práctica de explorar y/o estudiar cavernas). Pero pronto, la vida de Sarah se convierte en una tragedia cuando sufre un terrible accidente con su esposo e hija, donde ella es la única sobreviviente. Pasando un año desde la tragedia y tratando de salvar su amistad, Juno organiza con Beth y otras tres chicas una expedición a las montañas Apalaches.
La expedición sería a una cueva ya cartografiada, pero lo que parecía una aventura, se convierte en una pesadilla cuando ocurre un derrumbe y quedan atrapadas. En un inicio se mantienen calmadas porque dicha cueva tenía mapas y otras salidas, hasta que descubren que Juno mintió y las llevó a una cueva distinta, una no explorada, que Juno quería nombrar en honor a Sarah.
Mientras luchan por sobrevivir en la oscuridad y encontrar una salida, descubren que no están solas, que ya había sido explorada antes y que quienes entraron antes que ellas nunca salieron, pues en la cueva habitaban criaturas humanoides, salvajes y ciegas.
La película no se llama simplemente “El descenso”, por ellas descender hacia lo profundo de una cueva, sino que tiene un significado psicológico. El descender hacia el dolor, el trauma, la culpa y la desconfianza, mientras el miedo se intensifica en una situación desesperante, mientras criaturas de horror empiezan a cazarlas sanguinariamente. La cueva se transforma en la jaula de sus miedos y la tumba de quienes fueron antes de ella.
Todas las protagonistas son mujeres, por lo que dos líneas se cruzan: la feminidad y el salvajismo. Las principales protagonistas sostienen una amistad marcada por la pérdida, la culpa y la traición (Sarah, Beth y Juno).
Las criaturas que habitan la cueva han pasado por un proceso evolutivo en la oscuridad, y su origen y su sociedad dan para varias teorías. Son impulsivas, primitivas y bestiales; en cierto modo representan un mundo de aislamiento, degeneración y adaptación extrema; aun así, se puede luchar contra ellas, aunque parezca más una especie de masacre.
La atmósfera y el estilo visual de la película, es cerrado, opresivo, pero envolventes; es oscuro, pero eso no impide que no se puedan apreciar correctamente las escenas.
En la historia, personajes como Sarah y Juno pasan por una bestial transformación, la cueva las transforma y dejan de ser las personas que entraron en un inicio. Sarah ya estaba en el infierno antes de entrar a la cueva, pero es en la cueva donde se profundiza su dolor, mientras que Juno es fuerte, dura y fría y su manera de enfrentar la situación es extrema.
La película es sangrienta, aterradora y entretenida. La desesperación de los personajes es palpable y voraz; la historia, en sí, es bastante buena y se aborda correctamente. El suspenso se desata, apenas entran en la cueva y la tensión es abrumadora porque esas criaturas salían de repente y atacaban. Las criaturas, por Dios, son aterradoras y la primera visión real de ellas puede causar terror, por lo que para ser una película de hace 20 años está increíblemente bien hecha. Algo para pensar es que la película en un inicio da para varias teorías y el final es simplemente increíble.

Yo no sé porque con tu super historia imagine una peli más vieja, o no se si es pq antes de empezar a contar la trama de esta peli me hablabas del cine de terror más antiguo, pero todo tu relato lo imaginé con casi que en blanco y negro y las figuras humanoides como esculturas de cera

La vi hace años, fue bastante buena. Actualmente Until Down, el videojuego, me recuerda bastante a esta película más o menos de la mitad del juego al final. Tiene muy buena historia también
