The constant union of our similar perceptions is a proof that one is the cause of the other.
By nature, we believe more in those things that are constantly repeated throughout our lives to the point of adopting them. Therefore, every action will be a consequence of this. If we grow up adopting romantic love as our main focus and live in the fantasies that are posed in love movies, we will spend our lives searching for our own idealized story of romantic love. This is the case in this story directed by Marc Webb and written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, which will always be told from the point of view of Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), our protagonist, who will suddenly fall in love with Summer (Zooey Deschanel), a character who is inspired by a girl Scott Neustadter met in college who he thought would be the love of his life but turned out not to be.
At first glance to Tom, at least physically, Summer looks like the girl of his dreams and also currently considered one of the worst villains in history after Jenny in Forest Gump by at least 50% of the population. Then the million dollar question arises, was she really the villain?
Tom, is a quiet, romantic, dreamer, passionate about drawing and architecture that like everyone at some point in our lives, waiting for the arrival of that love that shakes all the boredom of his days and becomes his complement. He is the kind of guy who is willing to give everything for that person to make him feel happy by his side. Affectionate, understanding, attentive. In short, he's a good guy. Summer, for Tom, is what in the movies is defined as "Manic pixie dream girl" That ethereal fantastic creature, idealized by all, with an angelic face that for nothing in the world you would be able to think that she could also break your heart. She is a spontaneous and independent girl who tells us from the beginning of the film that she is very clear about what she wants. For her love is something idealized and that relationships last as long as they have to last until they finally end, so she prefers not to get involved in any serious commitment.
To understand this, we must first highlight a very important factor for the development of this story and it is the childhood of each one. Tom, had a happy childhood, with loving parents and therefore idealizing both the relationship of his parents as love stories and romantic movies, grew up with the dream of someday finding his ideal girl with whom he will be happy for life. Summer, on the other hand, also had a very happy and loving childhood with her parents, until they divorced and everything changed completely for her to the point of changing her conception about love and from that moment on this will influence her relationships. So, two people with totally different perceptions about love begin a relationship that is the chronicle of a death foretold.
Although Summer makes it clear to Tom that they will only be friends, she is the one who initiates the relationship. However, she is also the one who makes it clear to Tom shortly after they start dating that she just wants to have a good time and does not want anything serious. Tom accepts these conditions although deep down he still hopes that he will be able to change her mind. However, everything starts to get confusing because on the one hand, at the same time that Summer tells Tom that she doesn't want anything serious with him, her actions seem to indicate something different to Tom. Actions as simple as holding hands in public are part of body language that can be perceived differently from both parties. These actions can lead the other to act on what they interpret.
David Hume also posits that every idea is born of an impression. Impressions are about the encounter of our body with the external world. A body impacts us generating an impression and then withdraws generating an idea in our mind through our memory or our imagination. An idea can be real or unreal and also an idea of the imagination can acquire so much force that it becomes an idea of the memory generating effects on belief and judgment. As happens to be the case with a love relationship. Summer and Tom expect different things from their relationship and act on what they expect from it. Even though Summer is affectionate with Tom during the movie and one as a viewer may be thinking things like "If she doesn't want anything serious why is she giving him hope?" But why should she treat him badly? I mean, they are in a relationship and she may be taking things slow. We will never know what Summer's point of view is, we never fully knew her because as I mentioned in the beginning, the story of the movie will be told in time jumps always from Tom's point of view, which makes us see the different facets of the relationship, from the first fantasies to its decay. Emphasizing the happy moments for him because that was what kept him tied to Summer at the time of the breakup and did not allow him to move forward. Until he stopped idealizing her and so he was able to move on.
The colors present on the set also play an important role. Starting with the blue that will accompany Summer until the end of the film. From the smallest details to others as noticeable as her eyes. It will be the color that defines our protagonist, a color that on the one hand represents freedom and confidence because it is associated with the sky, but also because it is a cold color represents feelings such as sadness. Tom on the other hand, although at first you can see that it does not have a defined color, the color will not only be present in the attire of the protagonists, but also in the scenery. Tom will always be accompanied in a discreet way with warm colors that, when associated with the sun, represent fire, passion, enthusiasm, vitality and even danger. Everything always depends on the concept you want to give it. As in this case what the narrator wants to reflect from the beginning of the film is the idea that both have about love and even in the scenes, the color also speaks for itself to tell the development of the story from the beginning to its denouement. In which I highlight only to avoid telling how the events of the film occur, a scene in which Tom is very happy and begins to dance out of nowhere in the street surrounded by lots of blue.
The soundtrack also takes great importance in the film because no song is chosen at random, each one is directly related to the narrative. An iconic scene in this film is when he says he loves her and he tells the details about her that make her charming, then the music makes you idealize Summer as much as Tom does, but then later the same scene appears, but Tom's feelings are different because this time he feels anger and so he tells with the same images why he hates her and the music also changes. That's the importance of music in the images and how it can change your perspective on things.
Finally, was Summer the villain in this story? In my opinion, both were at fault. While it is true that Summer was clear from the beginning when she told tom about her views on love and relationships, throughout the movie she also came across as being somewhat inconsiderate of Tom's feelings and taking actions where she contradicts herself. No matter how clear she may have been from the beginning, when there are feelings involved and therefore your actions may hurt someone, boundaries, there must be. On the other hand, Tom is the typical friend that you warn from the beginning where he is getting into and he follows because he thinks that life is like one of those love movies he liked so much but the reality turned out totally different. Because in life, those endings are just a part of the development. Tom focused more on his idea of the perfect relationship than getting to know Summer or learning to listen to the signs to know if they were really right for each other. The relationship lasted as long as it had to. Long enough for Tom to receive a great lesson that would allow him to evolve and move on with his life.
Personally, I really liked this film, more than the plot, the art direction, the colors, the photography, the format in which it is told, all its structure, symbolism, cinema references, absolutely everything is perfectly achieved. Every aesthetic is a beauty. You know you have liked a film because at the end you ask yourself if you would like to see it again and the feeling is affirmative. This is the case for me with this film. Maybe not to watch it so often, but let's say that if there is the option to watch it, I wouldn't say no. Every detail is simply exquisite. Every detail is simply a visual exquisiteness.

Por naturaleza, creemos más en aquellas cosas que se repiten constantemente a lo largo de nuestras vidas al punto de adoptarlas. Por lo tanto, toda acción será consecuencia de esto. Si crecemos adoptando el amor romántico como nuestro eje principal y vivimos en las fantasías que se plantean en las películas de amor, vamos a pasar la vida buscando nuestra propia historia idealizada de amor romántico. Este es el caso que se plantea en esta historia dirigida por Marc Webb y escrita por Scott Neustadter y Michael H. Weber, que será contada siempre desde el punto de vista de Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), nuestro protagonista, quién se va enamorar repentinamente de Summer (Zooey Deschanel), personaje que está inspirado en una chica que Scott Neustadter conoció en la universidad que llegó a pensar que sería el amor de su vida pero resultó ser que no.
A simple vista para Tom, al menos físicamente, Summer se ve como la chica de sus sueños y también considerada en la actualidad como una de las peores villanas de la historia después de Jenny en Forest Gump al menos por un 50% de la población. Entonces surge la pregunta del millón de dólares ¿Realmente fue la villana?
Tom, es un tipo tranquilo, romántico, soñador, apasionado por el dibujo y la arquitectura que como todos en algún momento de nuestras vidas, espera por la llegada de aquel amor que sacuda todo el aburrimiento de sus días y se convierta en su complemento. Es el tipo de chico que está dispuesto a darlo todo por esa persona para que se sienta feliz a su lado. Cariñoso, comprensivo, atento. En definitiva, es un buen tipo. Summer, es para Tom, lo que en el cine se define como “Manic pixie dream girl” Esa criatura fantástica etérea, idealizada por todos, de rostro angelical que por nada del mundo serías capaz de llegar a pensar que también podría romper tu corazón. Es una chica espontánea e independiente que nos dice desde el comienzo de la película que está muy clara de lo que quiere. Para ella el amor es algo idealizado y que las relaciones duran lo que tienen que durar hasta que finalmente se acaban por lo que prefiere no enredarse en ningún compromiso serio.
Para entender esto, primero hay que destacar un factor muy importante para el desarrollo de esta historia y es la infancia de cada uno. Tom, tuvo una infancia feliz, con padres amorosos y por ende idealizando tanto la relación de sus padres como las historias de amor y películas románticas, creció con el sueño de poder encontrar algún día su chica ideal con quién será feliz para toda la vida. Summer por su lado, también tuvo una infancia muy feliz y amorosa junto a sus padres, hasta que estos se divorciaron y todo cambió completamente para ella al punto de cambiar su concepción acerca del amor y a partir de ese momento esto va a influir en sus relaciones. Entonces, dos personas con percepciones totalmente distintas acerca del amor comienzan una relación que es crónica de una muerte anunciada.
A pesar de que Summer le deja claro a Tom que solo serán amigos, es ella la que da inicio a la relación. No obstante también es ella la que le deja claro a Tom a poco tiempo de comenzar a salir que solo quiere pasarla bien y no quiere nada serio. Tom acepta estas condiciones aunque en el fondo mantiene la esperanza de que logrará hacerla cambiar de opinión. Sin embargo todo comienza a ser confuso porque por un lado, Al mismo tiempo que Summer le dice a Tom que no quiere nada serio con él sus acciones parecen indicar algo distinto para Tom. Acciones tan simples como tomarse de la mano en público son parte del lenguaje corporal que pueden ser percibidas de manera diferente de ambas partes. Estas acciones pueden llevar al otro a actuar en base a lo que interpreta.
David Hume también plantea que toda idea nace de una impresión. Las impresiones se tratan del encuentro de nuestro cuerpo con el mundo externo. Un cuerpo nos impacta generando una impresión y luego se retira generando una idea en nuestra mente a través de nuestra memoria o de nuestra imaginación. Una idea puede ser real o irreal y también una idea de la imaginación puede adquirir tanta fuerza que pasa a ser idea de la memoria generando efectos sobre la creencia y el juicio. Como pasa a ser el caso de una relación amorosa. Summer y Tom esperan cosas distintas de la relación que mantienen y actúan en base a lo que esperan de la misma. Aunque Summer se muestre cariñosa con Tom durante la película y uno como espectador pueda estar pensando cosas como “¿Sino quiere nada serio para qué le da esperanzas?” Pero ¿Por qué ella tendría que tratarlo mal? O sea, tienen una relación y ella quizás pueda estar llevando las cosas con calma. Nunca sabremos cuál es el punto de vista de Summer, nunca la conocimos del todo porque como mencioné en un principio, la historia de la película será contada en saltos de tiempo siempre desde el punto de vista de Tom, que nos hace ver las distintas facetas de la relación, desde las primeras fantasías hasta su decadencia. Haciendo énfasis en los momentos felices para él porque eso era lo que lo mantenía atado a Summer en el momento de la ruptura y no le permitía seguir avanzando. Hasta que dejó de idealizarla y así pudo seguir adelante.
Los colores presentes en el escenario también juegan un papel importante. Empezando por el azul que acompañará a Summer hasta el final de la película. Desde mínimos detalles hasta otros tan notorios como sus ojos. Será el color que defina a nuestra protagonista, un color que por un lado representa la libertad y la confianza por estar asociado con el cielo, pero también por ser un color frío representa sentimientos como la tristeza. Tom por su lado, aunque en un principio puedes ver como que no tiene un color definido, el color no estará presente únicamente en el atuendo de los protagonistas, también en el escenario. Tom siempre estará acompañado de manera discreta con colores cálidos que al asociarse con el sol, representan el fuego, la pasión, el entusiasmo, la vitalidad e incluso el peligro. Todo depende siempre del concepto que se le quiera dar. Como en este caso lo que nos quiere reflejar el narrador desde el principio de la película que es la idea que tienen ambos acerca del amor e incluso en las escenas, el color también habla por sí solo para contar el desarrollo de la historia desde el principio hasta su desenlace. En la que destaco únicamente para evitar contar como ocurren los hechos de la película, una escena en la que Tom se encuentra muy feliz y comienza a bailar de la nada en la calle rodeado de mucho azul.
La banda sonora también toma gran importancia en la película porque ninguna canción está elegida al azar, cada una está relacionada directamente con la narración. Una escena icónica en esta película es cuando él dice que la ama y va contando los detalles de ella que la hacen encantadora, entonces la música te hace idealizar a Summer tanto como Tom, pero luego más adelante aparece la misma escena, pero los sentimientos de Tom son distintos porque esta vez siente rabia y así va contando con las mismas imágenes porqué la aborrece y la música también cambia. He ahí la importancia de la música en las imágenes y como te puede cambiar la perspectiva de las cosas.
Finalmente, fue ¿Summer la villana en esta historia? En mi opinión, ambos tuvieron culpa. Si bien es cierto que Summer fue clara desde un principio cuando le dijo a tom sobre su opinión acerca del amor y las relaciones, a lo largo de la película también se mostró algo desconsiderada con los sentimientos de Tom y tomando acciones donde se contradice a sí misma. No importa cuán clara pudo ser desde el inicio, cuando hay sentimientos involucrados y por lo tanto tus acciones pueden lastimar a alguien, los límites, deben existir. Por otro lado, Tom es el típico amigo al que uno le advierte desde el inicio en donde se está metiendo y él sigue porque piensa que la vida es como una de esas películas de amor que tanto le gustaban pero la realidad resultó totalmente diferente. Porque en la vida, esos finales son solo una parte del desarrollo. Tom se enfocó más en su idea de relación perfecta que en conocer a Summer o aprender a escuchar las señales para saber si de verdad eran el uno para el otro. La relación duró lo que tenía que durar. Un tiempo suficiente para que Tom recibiera una gran lección que le permitiese evolucionar y seguir adelante con su vida.
En lo personal, me gustó mucho esta película, más que por la trama, la dirección artística, los colores, la fotografía, el formato en el que se cuenta, toda su estructura, simbolismos, referencias del cine, absolutamente todo está perfectamente logrado. Toda estética es una belleza. Sabes que una película te ha gustado porque al finalizar te preguntas si volverías a verla y la sensación es afirmativa. Este caso me ocurre con esta película. Quizás no para verla tan seguido, pero digamos que si está la opción de verla, no diría que no. Cada detalle es sencillamente una exquisitez visual.

500 Días con Ella, sin duda fue una de las mejores películas románticas con ese toque de comedia muy sutil que mantenía al espectador interesado y no solo en lo difícil que era para el personaje de Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) darse cuenta que Summer (Zooey Deschanel) andaba pendiente de otras cosa mas importantes y que tenia poco tiempo para pensar en el amor y sobre todo como se fueron dando las cosas que en el mundo real seria una locura.
Lo que me si no te puedo negar es que han pasado varios años y sigue siendo un clásico y no importa de la época que seas puedes conectar rápidamente y difícilmente te aburras de verla, no como pasa actualmente donde todo es predecible o repetitivo.

Si lo llevo a la vida real, hay una parte de mí que piensa que quizás hubiera funcionado, pero Tom estaba muy apurado por tener una relación. De igual manera creo que no me hubiera gustado ese final.
Es precisamente como está hecha la peli que te dan ganas de volver a verla. Es una belleza.

Interesante análisis, he visto la película muchísimas veces desde que se estrenó y mi interpretación al respecto siempre ha variado, en un principio por supuesto culpé a Summer (como todos) y luego a Tom, hoy al igual que tú siento que ambos tuvieron la culpa y terminaron poniéndose en una situación en dónde Tom inevitablemente sufriría.
Summer fue honesta, pero aceptó tener algo con Tom sabiendo que el sentía algo más y era insostenible solo jugetear y ya, Aunque Tom estaba advertido y nunca hizo nada por detener todo.
Independientemente de como fuese siento que la película nos deja un gran mensaje y parte de esta ambigüedad es el por qué funciona tan bien. En cierta forma, llegando a la adultez entendí que lo que no es para uno no es para uno y ya, entonces hice las pases con el hecho de que ella decidiera casarse y tener algo serio con alguien más, cuando en repetidas ocasiones le dijo a Tom que no buscaba eso.
Sabes, yo he estado en el lugar de Tom y me identifiqué totalmente con él, sin embargo siempre que él era el culpable por querer forzar lo que no era para él. Luego estuve en el lugar de Summer y tampoco es muy agradable estar de este lado. Creo que cuando hay sentimientos de por medio la situación se torna comlicada y si uno no está dispuesto a corresponder esos sentimientos lo mejor es abrirse y fue lo que no pasó con Summer.
Ciertamente la historia funciona bastante bien, además que de verdad es una belleza como está hecha la película. Pienso que si lo llevamos a la vida real ambos aprendieron una gran lección de vida.
