For those of you who are familiar with the name of the movie that stands out in the title you will know that there is a psychological roller coaster coming. In my previous review in which I talked about Interstellar I was able to share a rather interesting film with a somewhat complex narrative but one that in theory can be digested by a fairly general audience, something that differs with this film that I bring today. As you may already know, I like those films that give work to our neurons, that leave us a feeling of instability, curiosity, in short, that make us think in every sense of the word.
Indeed, today I bring you another of those puzzles, perhaps it is a film that is not so famous if we compare it with the most ostentatious Hollywood productions and it could be said that it does not have such sensationalist resources that invade the screen but, from my perspective, with a good script and masterful performances you can create works of art.
Without further ado, today we are going to analyze "Enemy", It is a Canadian production released in 2013 and is based on the novel "The Duplicate Man".
This adaptation surprised a lot because as I mentioned at the beginning the amount of resources used in this story were not so many, but I must admit that throughout the 90 minutes of its duration we will see a delight of the highest level highlighting of course its nature of the thriller genre.
Now, I ended up watching the movie because of many recommendations on the internet, I saw that it appeared in several Tops of psychological movies and I decided to watch it. It is not for all audiences and at the beginning you must have a lot of patience because the events are going to develop very slowly. In fact, in the first few minutes I was considering taking it out but the movie took its course.
I do not want to give further explanation (spoilers) of what happens during the development because I think it is a film that is worth to be seen and analyzed because it leaves you a lot of arguments to think about. The whole plot is a puzzle and it is up to you to put each piece in order. The film opens with the phrase "Chaos is order yet to be deciphered" and it couldn't be more appropriate. In this hour and a half of labyrinth we will have a "chaos" in the timelines which will confuse us a lot but once we have understood that order all the loose ends will be dissipated.
A brief introduction
The initial plot is a bit cliché in my opinion. We are told the story of a history professor who seems to be having a life on autopilot. The first scenes run in a loop representing the monotony that this character is living. Literarily we see how our protagonist goes to college, teaches his class, returns to his apartment, has sex with his partner and so on and so forth.
Something curious to mention is that the setting of the story has a sepia tone which is visually uncomfortable at first but then you realize that these colors represent very well what the characters are living.
Continuing with the plot, events seem to start to take a different course when a colleague at work suggests to our protagonist that he rent a movie. With a few skeptical expressions he agrees and decides to take a look at it.
So far everything seems to be in place but something very peculiar happens with the film. While watching the movie the protagonist realizes that one of the actors looks exactly like him.
In the past I have seen movies somewhat similar to these and usually there is a type of profile that describes this type of situation so I had more or less an idea of what was possibly going on. An example of another "similar" movie is "The Number 23" which I may talk about in the future here in the community.
Continuing with "Enemy", when he saw that this character looked a lot like him, he didn't hesitate to do an exhaustive investigation and contact the famous guy. Of course, he was not satisfied with just saying "He looks a little like me". They say that in the world we have one person identical to us but this particular case was extremely rare and we had to get to the bottom of it.
We will see some rather disconcerting scenes in which both characters will play their respective roles.
The generic explanation
I must say that although my review of this film is quite positive, it seems to me that "the explanation" that ties up all the loose ends is a resource too much exploited in many films and if you are already very familiar it may not impress you so much. The truth is that I was already getting an idea of what was going on but there were parts that I doubted a little. The narrative of this film is designed precisely to make you question everything.
This way of transmitting the facts reminds me a lot of Christopher Nolan's productions in which the timeline is infinitely played with and that is precisely where the magic is in "Enemy". If the story were a straight thread I think it would lose its charm and become a very generic production. Even though you get an idea of how it will end, the final scenes make you rethink the context.
I'm not very "ok" with the use of mental disorders to explain the whole labyrinth, but in this particular case I think the product is well done.

Para los que están familiarizados con el nombre de la película que resalta en el titulo sabrán que se viene una montaña rusa psicológica. En mi análisis anterior en el cual hablé de Interstellar pude compartir un film bastante interesante con una narrativa un tanto compleja pero que en teoría puede ser digerida por un público bastante general, cosa que difiere con esta cinta que traigo el día de hoy. Como ya sabrán me gustan esas películas que le den trabajo a nuestras neuronas, que nos deje una sensación de inestabilidad, curiosidad, en fin, que nos pongan a pensar con todo el sentido de la palabra.
Efectivamente, hoy les traigo otro de esos rompecabezas, quizás es una película que no es tan famosa si la comparamos con las producciones más ostentosas de Hollywood y se pudiera decir que no cuenta con recursos tan sensacionalistas que invadan la pantalla pero, desde mi perspectiva, con un buen guion e interpretaciones magistrales se pueden crear obras de arte.
Sin más preámbulo, hoy vamos a analizar "Enemy", Es una producción canadiense estrenada en 2013 y está basada en la novela "El hombre duplicado".
Esta adaptación sorprendió mucho pues como les mencionaba al principio la cantidad de recursos empleados en esta historia no fueron tantos, pero debo admitir que a lo largo de los 90 minutos de su duración veremos un deleite del más alto nivel destacando por supuesto su naturaleza del genero thriler.
Ahora bien, terminé viendo la película por muchas recomendaciones en internet, vi que aparecía en varios Tops de películas psicológicas y me decidí a verla. No es para todo tipo de publico y al principio si debes tener mucha paciencia pues los acontecimientos se van a ir desarrollando muy lento. De hecho, en los primeros minutos estaba considerando quitarla pero la película fue tomando su rumbo.
No quisiera dar mayor explicación (spoilers) de lo que sucede durante el desarrollo pues creo que es una cinta que merece la pena ser vista y analizada pues te deja un monto de argumentos en que pensar. La trama entera es un rompecabezas y eres tú quien debe ordenar cada pieza. La película inicia con la frase "El caos es orden aún sin descifrar" y no pude ser más apropiado. En esta hora y media de laberinto tendremos un "caos" en las lineas temporales cosa que nos confundirá bastante pero una vez hayamos entendido ese orden todos los cabos sueltos serán disipados.
Una breve introducción
El argumento inicial es un tanto cliché a mi parecer. Nos cuentan la historia de un profesor de historia quien parece estar teniendo una vida en piloto automático. Las primeras escenas transcurren en bucle representando la monotonía que está viviendo este personaje. Literariamente vemos como nuestro protagonista va a la universidad, da su clase, regresa a su apartamento, tiene sexo con su pareja y así una y otra y otra vez.
Algo curioso de mencionar es que la ambientación de la historia tiene un tono sepia cosa que es incomodo visualmente al principio pero luego te das cuenta que esos colores representan muy bien lo que los personajes están viviendo.
Continuando con la trama, los acontecimientos parecen empezar a tomar un curso distinto cuando un colega del trabajo le sugiere a nuestro protagonista que rente una película. Con unas cuantas expresiones escépticas acepta y decide darle un vistazo.
Hasta acá todo parece estar en su lugar pero algo muy peculiar ocurre con la cinta. Al ver la película el protagonista se da cuenta que uno de los actores es idéntico a el.
En el pasado he visto películas un tanto similar a estas y por lo general hay un tipo de perfil que describe este tipo de situación así que ya más o menos me hacia una idea de lo que posiblemente estaba pasando. Un ejemplo de otra película "similar" es "El Número 23" la cual puede que hable en un futuro acá en la comunidad.
Continuando con "Enemy", al ver que ese personaje se parecía muchísimo a el no dudó en hacer una exhaustiva investigación y ponerse en contacto con el famoso. Claro, no se conformó con decir "Se parece un poco a mi". Dicen que en el mundo tenemos a una persona idéntica a nosotros pero este caso en particular era extremadamente raro y había que llegar al fondo de esto.
Veremos escenas bastante desconcertantes en los que ambos personajes tendrán se respectivo protagonismo.
La explicación genérica
Debo decir que aunque mi critica a esta película es bastante positiva, me parece que "la explicación" que ata todos los cabos sueltos es un recurso demasiado pero demasiado explotado en muchas cintas y si ya estás muy familiarizado puede que no te impresione tanto. La verdad es que ya yo me estaba haciendo una idea de lo que sucedía pero habían partes que dudaba un poco. La narrativa de esta película está diseñada precisamente para que te cuestiones todo.
Esta manera de transmitir los hechos me recuerda bastante a las producciones de Christopher Nolan en las que se juega infinitamente con la linea temporal y es allí precisamente donde está la magia en "Enemy". Si la historia fuera un hilo recto creo que se perdería el encanto y pasaría a ser una producción muy genérica. A pesar de que ya te vas haciendo una idea de como puede concluir todo las escenas finales te hacen volver a plantearte el contexto.
No estoy muy "conforme" que se utilicen trastornos mentales para darle explicación a todo el laberinto pero en este caso particular me parece que el producto está bien logrado.

A good film by this filmmaker. I quite liked it, as well as his previous works. Nowadays he focuses more on visual impact, that's why I prefer his earlier films where he developed the plot and characters more. A good recommendation for those who haven't seen the film.

One heck of an impact movie but it is not the best from either the director or the main actor, yet I loved the spider scene and what it stood up in the film lore :) great film and good review, nice to see those, big hug :)

Me gusta mucho el trabajo de Villeneuve, incluida esta película. Si bien es cierto que la escena final, la última de todas, no me dejó conforme, la historia me gustó bastante. Ahora bien, la explicación no es un trastorno mental como tal; la cinta está basada en la novela El hombre duplicado de José Saramago y en la historia realmente existe este otro hombre idéntico al protagonista. No voy a decir cómo termina el libro para no hacer spoiler, pero es un final que a mí me dejó más satisfecho que el de Villeneuve.
Te recomiendo Incendies del mismo director y la película Blindness que está basada en otra novela de Saramago.
