I can think of two reasons:
- There aren't many people here yet. When we have an audience in millions, people like that will be there too.
- Fear of downvotes. Everyone here is more civil than they'll usually if there wasn't a risk of DV.

Maybe, I lean more toward the first and I add that those of us who are here now have a certain level that allows us to focus more objectively and not get carried away.
I too lean towards the first, but I can see the second reason being the biggest one for some.
