Traditionally, physical games for consoles like the Nintendo Switch have come in the form of cartridges that store game data directly. However, with the increasing size of modern titles—many exceeding the 64 GB cartridge limit—third-party publishers and developers have resorted to alternative formats such as game key cards.
These key cards serve as digital licenses that can be redeemed for access to the game, often distributed at a lower price point or as a more flexible solution for storage constraints. Despite some gamers’ preference for traditional physical media, key cards are sometimes the only viable way to release especially large games on the platform.
