The Complexities of Tree Planting in the Fight Against Climate Change
In the ongoing battle against climate change, tree planting is frequently heralded as a simple yet effective solution. Trees naturally absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and by increasing their numbers, it’s believed we can significantly reduce greenhouse gas levels. However, tree planting initiatives don’t always yield the anticipated carbon storage benefits. An analysis of Chile's efforts from 1974 to 2012 reveals that despite planting over a million hectares of trees, there were no significant gains in carbon storage.
