However, Yoon’s martial law decree met immediate legal challenges. The National Assembly, largely composed of his political foes, swiftly discussed and resolved to overturn the martial law declaration just five hours after it was issued. This legislative maneuver demonstrated the checks and balances within South Korea's democratic structure that Yoon had underestimated.
