Yet, the tide turned during World War II when Romania, under dictator Ion Antonescu, allied with Nazi Germany. Antonescu’s regime was marked by horrific events, including the deportation of Jews to concentration camps. As the tide of the war shifted, Romania found itself overthrown by Communist forces in 1944, enabling Soviet troops to enter Bucharest unopposed. This led to Romania's reconfiguration under a new socialist government, with significant territorial losses enforced by the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact in 1940.
