In April 1945, with the Allies closing in, the British unleashed a devastating aerial bombardment on Heligoland, transforming it into a devastated landscape. Following Germany's surrender, Heligoland was once more handed over to British control in what was a symbol of victory.

In 1947, the British executed one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history to obliterate the remnants of military defenses, concluding over a century of military strategies associated with the island. After years of military use, Heligoland was eventually returned to the now West German government, allowing its inhabitants to reclaim their home.
