This bastion was seen as a symbol of Danish strength; however, it quickly became evident that it was ill-equipped to withstand the modern firepower and disciplined tactics of the Prussian and Austrian armies. In a critical decision fraught with consequence, the Danish commanders opted for a night retreat from the Danav, seeking to regroup and avoid complete annihilation. This retreat, however, morphed into a desperate struggle for survival in the treacherous wintry terrain.
