Part 3/9:
The British government has substantiated their claim with symbolic markers, from establishing a post office and flag to creating laws and issuing coins featuring Antarctic wildlife. Yet, the situation becomes convoluted when one considers the counterclaims from Argentina and Chile.
Argentina's and Chile's Claims
Argentina argues that it was among the first nations to establish a presence in Antarctica. They set up a weather station on the South Orkney Islands in 1904 and raised their flag, claiming it as the oldest permanent settlement in Antarctica. This assertion has deep historical significance; the establishment of this base is celebrated in Argentina as the Day of the Argentine Antarctic.
