Since the onset of Russia's war against Ukraine in 2014, the Donbas region has become synonymous with devastation and conflict. Yet, beyond the war-torn images that have captured global attention lies a long-standing legacy of heavy industry, particularly coal mining. For over a century, Donbas has powered Ukraine's economy and played a central role in the Soviet Union's industrialization. Today, however, the miners of Donbas find themselves in a precarious battle, one that extends beyond the physical depth of coal mines but into the very essence of their lives amid ongoing violence.
