Danzig, historically known as the Free City of Danzig, was a city with a predominantly German population but operated under significant Polish influence as per the Treaty of Versailles. Maintaining its status as a free city, Danzig held a critical port that Poland considered essential for its access to the sea. In contrast, Slovakia, significantly larger and more populous than Danzig, was an area of strategic value due to its ethnic mix and historical ties with both Hungary and Poland.
