The aftermath of the war saw the intricate balancing act of the Dayton Accords, which created two distinct entities within Bosnia: the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (comprised of Bosniaks and Croats) and Republika Srpska. These hopeful signs, however, deteriorated in the following years as ethnic tensions resurfaced, and a landmark ruling by the European Court of Human Rights called attention to the discriminatory nature of Bosnia’s ethnic-based constitutional structure.
