Part 2/8:
Since becoming Prime Minister in 2010, Viktor Orbán has faced continual scrutiny from the EU for what critics describe as democratic backsliding in Hungary. The European Commission has repeatedly accused his government of undermining judicial independence and press freedom. The situation escalated significantly in 2018 when the European Parliament voted to invoke Article 7 of the EU Treaty, which would allow for the suspension of certain rights for a member state failing to uphold EU values. However, this move failed to result in any substantial action.
