Part 8/9:
By 2006, renewed military offensives by the Sri Lankan government began to dismantle LTTE's operational infrastructure. The escalation of violence peaked in 2009, culminating in the complete defeat of the LTTE in May of that year. The final battles were marked by intense civil strife and severe civilian casualties, with reports estimating the death toll to reach upwards of 250,000, sirens of the dire humanitarian situation were largely ignored by the international community.
Aftermath and Legacy
Following the conflict, almost a decade of silence followed regarding the issues of ethnic reconciliation and justice. The Sri Lankan government has faced criticism for failing to address the underlying grievances that spurred the civil war, and tensions remain palpable.
