Canada and the EU already share a robust relationship. The two have a free trade agreement, and Canada is recognized as an observer state in the Council of Europe. Additionally, Canada’s membership in NATO, which has long served as a cornerstone of European security, further strengthens ties between Canada and Europe.
Mark Carney, Canada’s newly appointed Prime Minister, marked his first foreign visit to France by calling Canada “the most European of non-European countries” and emphasized the notion that Canada and Europe can achieve greater strength together.
