Challenges to Membership

Despite Canada’s unique position and the flexible definition of what constitutes a “European” state, multiple barriers hinder the likelihood of EU accession. One fundamental challenge comes from the process for accessing the EU, which requires unanimous consent from existing member states. In recent times, EU nations have expressed “enlargement fatigue,” causing hesitation in bringing new countries into the fold.
