Iran's water crisis can be traced to a series of misguided policies throughout its modern history. Leaders have often viewed technological innovation as a panacea for water scarcity, resulting in excessive dam constructions without adequately considering environmental impacts or water sustainability.
Following the Iran-Iraq War, the construction of dams became a hallmark of progress, led by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). However, these projects often benefited corrupt insiders rather than solving water management issues. Many dams were constructed inappropriately, leading to adverse ecological effects and even displacement of communities.
