Since its inception in 2009, the Belgian Pro League has undergone numerous adjustments, but the current structure remains perplexing. The league begins with a regular season where 16 teams face each other, home and away. If teams finish on the same points, the one with more wins takes the higher standing, cascading down to goal difference if necessary. For instance, Circle Brugge's placement preceding Genk in the 2023-24 season illustrates this hierarchy despite having a poorer goal difference.
Upon conclusion of the regular season, the league splits into three distinct playoff groups: the championship group consisting of the top six teams, the middle group competing for the Conference League, and the relegation group comprising the bottom four.
