The contemporary job market has been described as "atrocious." This is particularly evident when major corporations announce mass layoffs. Many workers find themselves trapped in jobs that offer minimal security, leaving them anxious about their financial futures. In stark contrast, medieval feudalism operated on reciprocal obligations, providing peasants a sense of economic and social security.
Surfs, though bound to the land, had guaranteed plots that ensured sustenance in exchange for labor or rent paid to their lords. Lords, in turn, were compelled to protect their surfs; after all, a significant revolt by a disenfranchised peasantry could spell disaster for any lord.
