Today, Narva presents a paradox of contrasting realities. While some areas boast newly constructed buildings, others are abandoned and in disrepair. The dynamics of this border city have been further complicated by ongoing geopolitical tensions following Russia’s aggression in Ukraine starting in 2022. The residents, many of whom have historical ties to Russia, find themselves in a precarious situation, straddling the divisions between their Russian heritage and living within an EU member state that has distanced itself from its Soviet past.
