Sweden’s historical ambitions to expand its territory were quashed during the early 1600s when attempts to secure an Arctic coastline were defeated in the Calmar War. Sweden ultimately secured its interests in free passage through critical trade routes rather than challenging Norway’s stake in the Arctic.
