With the advent of the Vietnam War, Tony saw an opportunity to re-engage with the military. Under the alias Larry Thorne, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he once again found himself entrenched in combat. Serving as an intelligence officer, he demonstrated the same courage that had marked his previous battles.
In October 1965, during a reconnaissance mission in Vietnam, Tony's helicopter disappeared in a remote area. Despite an extensive search, it wasn't until 1999 that his remains, along with those of his team, were discovered, leading to a poignant memorial and eventual burial at Arlington National Cemetery— uniquely, as the only former SS soldier interred there.
