The Tuareg, a stateless ethnic group dispersed across Mali, Niger, and Algeria, has long sought to establish the independent nation of Azawad. Following Mali's independence from France in 1960, the Tuareg felt sidelined and began a series of rebellions against the Malian government. The situation escalated with an uprising in 2012, as the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad declared independence, though this was not recognized internationally.
