Despite earlier gains, the declaration was short-lived as the group’s alignment with extremist factions led to its downfall. A subsequent peace agreement in 2013 promised greater autonomy but failed to fully materialize, and conditions in northern Mali remain unstable. The Tuareg have regained control of parts of northern Mali amidst political turmoil, and there are indications they may again attempt to declare Azawad independent. The international community's response could play a pivotal role in determining the future of this new state.
