The situation further complicated in 2020 with the outbreak of the Tigray War—an internal conflict in Ethiopia exacerbated by ethnic tensions and the dominance of the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF). Given that many Eritreans identify ethnically with the Tigrayans, the role of Eritrea in this evolving crisis cannot be dismissed. While many anticipated Eritrea might support the TPLF in the face of Ethiopian aggression, historical betrayals and shifting alliances led to a curious stance where Eritrea’s ruling party viewed the TPLF as a military threat instead.
