The feelings of disillusionment extend to the Western Cape, one of the country’s nine provinces, where growing calls for independence have emerged. Advocates for a referendum on a so-called "Capexit" are not alone in their sentiment; the movement has been gaining traction. If successful, this ambitious proposal would establish the Cape Republic, which would encompass the Western Cape, parts of the Northern and Eastern Cape, and a portion of the Free State.
