Growing Frustration with Government Policies
In more recent years, frustration within the Western Cape has also stemmed from national government policies, especially those based on race. The ANC’s Employment Equity Amendment Act has come under fire for perpetuating racial quotas that critics argue further entrench divisions instead of ameliorating socioeconomic disparities. For many residents of the Western Cape, the law represents an overreach of government control and, in the eyes of its opponents, seems reminiscent of the oppressive policies of apartheid.
