As tension between Italy and Greece escalated, Mussolini pushed ahead with plans for invasion, dismissing warnings about the Greeks’ fighting capability. On October 28, 1940, Italian forces invaded Greece. The Italian military operation was met with swift and determined resistance. Although expecting to defeat a much smaller Greek force, the Italians quickly found themselves bogged down by poor preparation, logistics, and terrain unsuitable for their offensive maneuvers.
