The 1987 elections, marred by allegations of vote rigging, triggered widespread violence and a full-scale insurgency. The ensuing decade witnessed severe human rights violations by Indian forces, creating an atmosphere of distrust. Accusations emerged that Pakistan was supporting the insurgency, leading to another significant confrontation in 1999. Since then, Kashmir has remained a focal point of internal and external tensions for India.
In 2019, the Indian government's decision to revoke Kashmir’s autonomy further escalated situations in the region, marked by protests and unrest. While this action was framed as a means of integration and development, many viewed it as a consolidation of Indian sovereignty over the region.
