The year was 602 CE when Emperor Maurice of the Eastern Roman Empire found himself in a precarious situation. Having recently achieved a notable victory against Slavic invaders, Maurice faced discontent among his troops. Instead of allowing the army to return home for rest and celebration, he commanded them to remain in the Balkans during the brutal winter. Fueled by anger and betrayal, the soldiers marched back to Constantinople, led by an officer named Focus, who orchestrated a coup.
