The situation in Cambodia further complicated matters. Vietnam had previously collaborated with the Cambodian Khmer Rouge but fell out of favor when Pol Pot rose to power and began viewing Vietnam as a threat. This paranoia led him to imprison pro-Vietnamese individuals. When Vietnam invaded Cambodia in 1978 and overthrew Pol Pot, China, who was still aligned with the Khmer Rouge, perceived a threat to its influence in the region.
