The mantra to “learn to code” became ubiquitous, appealing to a wide range of interests—from parents seeking vocational training for their children to politicians highlighting the need for a skilled workforce. With the support of government initiatives, nearly 15,000 high schools in the U.S. now offer Computer Science classes, and 11 states mandate a Computer Science course for graduation. Yet, amidst this fervor, there was little acknowledgment of the challenges inherent in mastering programming—a skill complex enough to baffle even seasoned professionals.
